New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 1, 2007, New Braunfels, Texas Sunday, April 1,2007-Herald-Zeitung - Page 5A KOM THE WIRE From The Associated Press BEIRUT Lebanon U.N. CHIEF WARNS ARMS SMUGGLING FROM SYRIA COULD THREATEN CEASEFIRE - The U.N. chief said Saturday that arms are reportedly still being smuggled over the border from Syria to Lebanon, and he urged all sides to fully comply with a United Nations resolution that ended the summer war between Hezbollah militants and Israel. The leading Lebanese daily An-Nahar reported Saturday that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Lebanese security chiefs that Israel had provided him with "evidence and pictures" of trucks crossing from Syria to Lebanon and unloading weapons. "There are intelligence reports that arms are smuggled. I am concerned by that kind of arms smuggling, which will destabilize the situation in Lebanon," he told reporters later during a stop at the headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. The most popular renderings depict scenes of nature, such as flowers and sunsets. These depictions are in keeping with the interests and aesthetic sensitivities of those who would like their final resting environments to be as beautiful as their lives. For these people, painted images of butterflies mid flowers are more in keeping with their lives than bare wood or metal finishes, Simply put, it is all a matter of taste. The important thing to take away from this is that people are coming to see their deatlis as reason to celebrate their lives. The decision lo select a coffin or casket is made by the family concerned according to personal preference. For many people, the coffin or casket is regarded its an important tribute and it is therefore selected with careful consideration. Always check with your cemetery for any conditions on the sliape, materials and size of coffin that is relevant to your preferred gravesite. Bush calls for sailors' release CAMP DAVID, Md. (AP) - President Bush on Saturday called for the release of 15 British sailors and marines being held by J ran, calling their capture by Tehran "inexcusable behavior." "Iran must give back the hostages," Bush said. "They're innocent, they did nothing; wrong, and they were summarily plucked out of waters." Bush also said during the joint appearance with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that Alberto Gonzales is "honorable and honest" and has his full support, despit e contradictory statements about the embattled attorney general's role in the firing of federal prosecutors. The comments on the captured Britons were the first from Bush, as Washington has taken a low-key approach so far out of concern that more robust intervention might aggravate the situation and shake international resolve on Iran's nuclear program. Bush did not answer a question about whether the U.S. would react militarily if those captured had been American. With the crisis in its second week, the president said he supports British Prime Minister Tony Blair's efforts to find a diplomatic resolution. Bush would not discuss options for what might be done if Iran does not comply, but he seemed lo reject any swapping of the British captives for Iranians detained in Iraq. "I support the prime minister when he made it clear there were no quid pro quos," the president said. Lawmaker urges AG to step down Somali capital in its third day of righting MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Artillery fire and mortar shells rained down on Somalia's capital Saturday, killing and wounding untold numbers of civilians as government and Ethiopian troops tried to wipe out Islamist insurgents. The offensive, which started Thursday, has sparked the heaviest fighting in Mogadishu since the early 1990s. On Friday, insurgents shot down an Ethiopian helicopter gunship and mortar shells slammed into a hos- pital, leaving corpses piled in the streets and wounding hundreds of people. "The victims are the civilians, only civilians are dying and get-ring wounded in this fighting," said Khadijo Farah Warsame, 45, a mother of seven. The International Committee of the Red Cross said dozens of people have been killed since Thursday and more than 220 wounded, most of them civilians with bullet, grenade and other war wounds. WASHINGTON (AP) - A Republican congressman on Saturday urged Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign, citing what he said were Gonzales' contradictory statements about his role in the firing of eight federal prosecutors. "I trusted him before, but I can't now," said five-term Rep. Lee Terry, whose district includes metropolitan Omaha. Gonzales' credibility took a blow this past week during testimony by liis former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sampson, who resigned March 12, said the attorney general was regularly briefed about plans to fire the prosecutors and was involved with discussions about "this process of asking certain U.S. attorneys to resign." Lawmakers impatient to hear Gonzales' side of the story said the embattled attorney general needed lo explain himself quickly or risk more damage to his department. Gonzales is to testify on Capitol Hill on April 17. Shotgun Willfs Lawn and Garden Equipment Repair 830.626.8874 168 W. Brev & Donald Bedford GUM DISEASE AND TOOTH LOSS A LOSING PROPOSITION Gum disease, not tooth decay, is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. Tooth loss related to periodontal (gum) disease has much to do with the fact that the mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria, which continuously form a sticky film called "plaque" around the teeth. In gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease, the gums become inflamed. Left untreated, gingivitis can result in the gums pulling away from the teeth, thereby creating a pocket that traps more bacteria lying beyond the reach of the toothbrush. Eventually, the infection can erode the bone that holds the teeth in place. With regular exams and treatment, gum disease and its associated problems may be averted. You may not even be aware that you have gum disease because often there is no pain.
