New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 7, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6A — Herald-Zeitung — Wednesday, December 7, 2005 More jobs available near Toyota plant Poll shows hurricane response aided Perry Toyota’s on-site suppliers are hiring 2,100 employees in production, skilled maintenance, management and administrative positions. Scott Hayes, vice president of manufacturing, technical and quality of Toyoda Gosei Texas, one of Toyota’s onsite suppliers, said the company is looking for individuals who have a strong work ethic, are team players and have problem-solving skills. Toyota’s onsite suppliers also have partnered with Alamo WorkSource to make the process easy for applicants. Candidates can apply either online at the Web site www.workintexas.com or in person at any one of the five San Antonio-area Alamo WorkSource centers during normal business hours, regardless if prospective employees previously applied with Toyota. Job seekers also have access to a broad range of training and education services. Alamo WorkSource Career Centers are located at: 1499 Hillcrest Drive, San Antonio, 210-438-0581; 1201 Austin Hwy. Suite 117, San Antonio, 210-822-7640; 2538 Castroville Road, San Antonio, 210-436-0670; 3723 S. Flores St. Suite IOO, San Antonio, 210-928-3985; and 4535 E. Houston, San Antonio, 210-581-0190. Of the 21 Toyota onsite suppliers, the 18 listed below will be hiring for the 2,100 positions. Experience is not required for jobseekers. Three of the onsite suppliers will contract with other suppliers to conduct their operations: ■ Ark Recycling Texas — industrial waste management recycling; ■ Avanzar Interior Technologies — automotive seat systems and interior parts; ■ Curtis-Maruyasu America — tubing-related parts; ■ Futaba Industrial Texas — scrap metal recycling; ■ Hero Assemblers — wheel and tire assembly; ■ Hero Logistics — logistics services; ■ Kautex-Textron — blow- molded plastic products; ■ Metalsa — metal structures and components; ■ Metokote — protective coating specialists; ■ Millennium Steel of Texas — steel processing; ■ Reyes Automotive Group — trim components; ■ Takumi Stamping Texas — stamped components; ■ Tenneco — exhaust systems; ■ Toyoda Gosei Texas — interior and exterior systems; ■ Toyota Logistics Services — accessorizing and distribution; ■ Toyotetsu Texas — large stamped and welded steel brackets; and ■ Vutex—assembly services. In 2003, Toyota chose a 2,000-acre site in San Antonio to build approximately 200,000 Tundra full-size trucks annually, beginning in fall 2006. Between Toyota and its onsite suppliers, the new plant with its 4, IOO jobs, will represent a more than SI billion investment. WATER CONTINUED FROM Page 1A Contamination level dropping steadily could have sent a letter earlier. Bexar Met officials did not return calls from the Herald-Zeitung by press time. Trihalomethane is a byproduct chemical that occurs when organic matter in the water reacts with chlorine. The Environmental Protection Agency has set standards for trihalomethane in water because there is a slight possibility of an increased risk of bladder or colorectal cancer over a lifetime of drinking water with trihalomethane above 80 parts per billion. EPA estimates drinking two liters of water containing IOO parts per billion trihalomethane every day for 70 years could result in three extra cases of cancer for every 10,000 people. There is no immediate risk from the water with THMs above 80 parts per billion, according to the EPA. The maximum legal level of trihalomethane is 80 parts per billion. When they first notified customers of the problem in 2004, CLWSC officials recorded levels of 136.4 parts per billion, Case said. The levels have continued to decline and were 72.6 parts per billion after the most recent test, he said. Bulverde Mayor Sarah Ste-vick said that the chemical might not be an immediate danger, but she still is very concerned about the longterm effects on her residents. She said many residents have contacted her with concerns about their health and ways to keep their water from being contaminated. “The question is, how long and at what level will it take for this to be a danger?” she said. "What about for a child, a senior, a person with a weakened immune system?” Bexar Met has offered to send water filters to affected customers, but Stevick said that isn’t enough. “What about bathing and washing dishes?” she said. “I’m talking about getting intake filters so all the water that comes into a house is filtered.” Stevick said it isn’t fair that state law allows water providers 12 months before they have to notify residents about a contaminant. She hopes changes on notification are made soon a statewide level. “I don’t think its fair that anyone in the state should be drinking contaminated water,” she said. Case said CLWSC has changed its methods of treatment, which seems to be working to lower trihalomethane levels. For a person to be affected by trihalomethane, they would have to drink two liters of contaminated water a day, he said. Stevick said that the numbers may be improving, but Bulverde Hills residents are still concerned. “They don’t feel they got want they wanted out of the meeting,” she said. “They want reasons and answers.” RU ENE FAMILY KAREN RUDE DDS 'Ut my family taka car* of your family' invisalignr straight teeth, no braces Free Whitening with Invisaiign Mon. - Fri. Rick Perry’s response to back-to-back Gulf Coast hurricanes has fueled a surge in his joh-approval ratings and put him on firm footing heading into election year, according to a poll released Tuesday. The Texas Poll surveyed 1,000 randomly selected Tex-ans on behalf of Scripps Howard and several media outlets the last two weeks of November. It found that Perry’s once-low job-approval rating climbed IO percentage points since a September poll. Forty-nine percent of respondents in the recent poll said they approve of the way Perry is doing his job, and 37 percent said they disapprove. Three months aeo, those numbers were nearly reversed. The polls have an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points. "The hurricanes have absolutely done the governor a lot of good,” said Ty Meighan, director of the Texas Poll. “That’s what a lot of our respondents told us. T hey felt like he was compassionate for those who were displaced and that he fought to make sure Texas did not get stuck for the cost.” Perry was in the national spotlight when Texas became a haven for hundreds of thousands of people who fled Louisiana when Hurricane Katrina hit in late August. Perry worked with local leaders in Texas to turn sports arenas and other large buildings into housing for evacuees. AARP seeks volunteers for Tax-Aide program AARPTax-Aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-mn tax counseling and preparation service, is looking for volunteers for either tax counseling and/or leadership positions. Each year from February through April 15, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare tax returns for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older. Volunteers are especially needed to assist with electronic filing of returns. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. You don’t need to be an AARP member or be a retiree to volunteer (or to receive assistance from AARP Tax-Aide volunteers). “The AARP Tax-Aide program is a wonderful resource for the American taxpayer,” said Teresa Ogg, AARP Tax-Aide local coordinator. “AARP Tax-Aide volunteers get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people deal with the challenges of preparing their tax forms.” Last year, nearly 32,000 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 1.85 million people file their personal income tax forms. The program is offered at approximately 9,000 sites around the country, including the Comal County Senior Center and the New Braunfels Public library. AARP Tax-Aide tax counselor volunteers receive comprehensive training in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. Leadership positions coordinate program delivery by volunteers at sites at the local, state or regional level or manage specific program activities such as technology, training, administration or communication. For information about becoming a local AARP Tax-Aide volunteer, call Ogg at 620-0873 or toll-free at I -888-AARPNOW (I -888-227-7669) or visit www.aiirp.org/taxaide. Santa hopes to brighten holidays for seniors Santa will bring holiday cheer to seniors this month at the Be Santa to a Senior program. Several community businesses and organizations have teamed up to bring the holidays to seniors who may have been overlooked. The program will run until Dec. 17. A Christmas tree, set up at the Chic-Fil-A at 1031 S. Walnut Ave., is decorated with the names and gift requests of local seniors. A citywide gift-wrapping day will be held Dec. 14. The participating seniors were identified by participating nonprofit organizations as people who may be alone during the holidays. Carolyn Casey, operator of I Ionic Instead Senior Care, said the program will not only bring the seniors gifts, but also much needed interaction with other people. “Since children are often the focus of holiday festivities, we would like to help brighten the holidays for some area seniors as well,” she said. If you know the name of a needy senior or are interesting in volunteering to help with gift-wrapping, call 624-8380.
