Schertz Hot Meals Program receives honors for area SCHERTZ —The Schertz Senior Hot Meals Program has been named Volunteer Station of the Year for the tricounty area by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of South Central Texas. RSVP has a dual purpose of engaging people 55 or older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers. The organization lauded the Schertz Hot Meals Program and its volunteer cadre for their tireless efforts to improve the quality of life for area seniors. In existence since 1981, Hot Meals provides two hot lunches per week (Mondays and Thursdays) for area seniors, and takes meals to housebound seniors as well. According to chairperson Elizabeth Price, the Schertz program competed not only with other meal programs, but also with libraries, nursing homes and other service functions. The nonprofit program receives city support, as well as funding and other support from the Methodist Church, Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Esplanade Gardens.
