New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 23, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas GOODFORYOU Photo submitted Rotarian pilot Alan Stahlman and volunteer firefighters from California unload donated food and supplies from Texas. Canyon Lake Rotarian participates in Angel flight* Canyon Lake Rotary Club’s “Rotarian of the Year 2005,” pilot Alan Stahlman just returned from Mississippi where he flew several “Angel Flight” missions to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. “I just got back all tuckered out!” Stahlman said. “I flew about 25 hours and 3300 miles. On Monday, we flew directly over the president in Air Force One at Gulfport sitting on the ground. The only aircraft allowed were Angel Flights, military, and law enforcement. There were hundreds of planes and helicopters. While in the air, one controller said, ‘will you guys hold on a minute while we sort this out.’ Air Traffic Control did a fantastic job.” On Thursday, Stahlman was told to hold on the runway at Baton Rouge while four presidential helicopters lifted off directly in front of him... it was Vice President Dick Cheney and company. “I wish the public could see the hundreds of Angel Flight pilots and their planes and other volunteer planes from all of the country going in and out of the available airports in the area,” Alan mused. “At Baton Rouge Airport, it looked liked a battle holding area. We pilots were lined up and issued missions to fly, and there were only minutes between flights. I heard this was the largest airlift effort in history.” Birthdays/Anniversaries HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: ■ Travis Williams, 13 years old ■ Mandy Nichole Ortiz ■ Patricia Timmerman ■Ashley Rose Gonzales, Sept. 21,15 years old HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: ■ Ramon and Angelita Velasquez, 49 years How to get your news into the Herald-Zeftung Residents are encouraged to share their accomplishments, special moments and community events.
