Work on Friesenhaus Restaurant begins anew By Leigh Jones StaffWriter The sound of jack-hammers reverberating through the stripped hull of the old Krause’s Cafe Wednesday evening was sweet music to Gunter Dirks’ ears. The machines’ racket foretold progress, a commodity the German immigrant to New Braunfels had found in short supply during the past few weeks. Remodeling work on the old building ground to a halt over a problem with the building permit, but last week, Dirks received word the construction could continue. “It has been hard,” he admitted. “We had a problem with the city permits, but that is over and now our dreams are coming true.” After a month-long hiatus, construction crews are back in the Casten Avenue building, working hard to make the Nov. 15 grand opening possible. The electrical wiring, plumbing and gas lines must be completely replaced before Dirks, his wife Cornelia and sons Peter and Walter, can transform the interior into Friesenhaus Restaurant and Bakery, a traditional German restaurant. “It is fitting this old place will be run by Germans,” Dirks said. “New Braunfels needs us and we need New Braunfels." When the renovation is complete, the building will house a restaurant, wine bar, bakery shop and meeting room. Dirks said he hoped his family-run business would once again become the hub of New Braunfels. In its hey-day, Krause’s was the place city leaders met to discuss important matters over coffee at the Shamtish Taible. “ We are so thankful we can do this,” Dirks said. “It was a long way for us to get here.” I he immigrants left their home near Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New Braunfels earlier this year. The y are determined to create c I new life in America. Fining into Texas has been easy — the people in his home provi nce of Fries share what Dirks considers a staple in the Lone. Star State. “Frit 3S are as square-headed as Text ms, so we feel comfortable ht 're,” he said, laughing. i( TEXAS LOTTERY SATURDAY LOTTO Jackpot: $4 million 3-13-37-4043 BB 15 -IMRS- WEDNESDAY LOTTO Lot ter V    ^a(*p°t: ^ mi||ion 568-13-24 BB 15 PICK 3    I    CASH FIVE Day    0-1 -1 I 14-16-17 26 30 Night    6 / ’ 2 I MEGA MILLIONS TEXAS TW0-STTP    j    1-8-Z7-31-90 N/B40 2-5-20-35 BB 4    I    MBgapfier 3 (INCEST 1176 FM306 @ OLD HUNTER RE >.
