Kaleidoscope of color Oak Leaf Quilts opens business, in town, offering quilting notions BUSINESS Briefs By Leigh Jones Staff Writer Terri Firth and Nancy Ament are adding another stitch to the historical fabric of New Braunfels, returning one of the city’s landmark buildings to its former glory. The Klappenbach Building, built in 1890, once again is the place to go for colorful fabric, needles and thread. When friends Firth and Ament discovered the vacant mercantile building, they knew what they had to do — open a quilt shop. “The shop just called to us,” Firth said. “It has a lot of ambiance, with fabric shelves and a big counter with brass tacks and a measuring chain. It was just what we needed.” The women opened Oak Leaf Quilts June 17 and have had hardly any time to stop and take a breath ever since. “Things have gone better than I thought they would,” Ament said. “The local quilting community has been so supportive.” Ament gave up a life of semi AT A GLANCE ■ What: Oak Leaf Quilts ■ Where: 225 South Seguin Ave., across from Pizza Hut ■ Contact: (830) 629-0774 leisure to return to the work-ing world and make her dream become a reality. "Being able to come to work every day and do something I love makes it worthwhile to come out of retirement,” she said. Customers who enter through the shop’s squeaky front door and traverse the polished wood floors are treated to friendly customer service, and of course the opportunity for a nice chat. The walls are lined with bolts of cotton quilting fabric — some is even hand-dyed. Shoppers also will find needles, thread, batting and wearables to tempt their inner creative geniuses. For women, or men, intimidated by thimbles and measuring tape, the shop offers embroidered pieces and a few consignment items for sale. CiCVs to give away book covers to students CiCi’s Pizza announced rcently that it is giving away 2 million book covers to students nationwide. The company’s inaugural book cover drive includes three different designs highlighting the outdoors, animals and sports, and a coupon for a free kid s buffet with the purchase of an adult buffet. Local CiCi’s managers will visit their neighborhood schools to promote the program to the school’s staff. Dur-ing the first two weeks of school, students can stop by their neighborhood CiCi’s to pick up their free book covers. for your FREE CONSULTATION!
