New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 6, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6A — Herald-Zeitung — Saturday, August 6, 2005 D-backs’ Halsey helps cool down Astros, 7-3 PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks answered quickly after falling behind. Troy Glaus highlighted a five-run second inning with a two-run homer and Shawn Green and Tony Clark also connected, powering die Diamondbacks to a 7-3 victory’ over the Houston Astros Thursday night. Craig Counsell drove in a run and Glaus also doubled for Arizona, which avoided getting swept by I louston in a series for the first time. The Diamondbacks scored more than three runs for only the fourth time in 15 games. The loss was just the second in 11 games and third in 18 for I louston. but it allowed Washington to move within one game in the wild-card race. The Astros played a late game at San Francisco Friday. Arizona rookie Brad I lalsev (8-7) remained unbeaten since June, allowing two nins—one earned — on eight hits and a walk in six innings. Halsey, who was on Texas’ 2002 national championship team and whose parents, Marcus and Loretta, reside at Lake McQueeney, is 4-0 in six starts since an 11-3 loss to San Francisco on June 28.1 Ie also is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA against I louston this season. “I like him,” I louston manager Phil Gamer said of I lalsev. “I think he’s going to be a real good pitcher. I le’s pitched two real good games against us.' Jose Valverde got the final five outs for his third save. I he Astros scored on a sacrifice fly. groundnut and I lalsev s field ing error. The decision, however, quickly evoked passions and complaints from both sides. At Florida State, Wetherell said the NCAA was trying to embarrass the schtxil for using its nickname, even though the Seminole IVibe of Florida has given the university permission to continue using it. "Other Seminole tribes are not supportive" said Charlotte Westerhaus, the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion. Supporters also were unhappy. Vernon Bellecourt, president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media and a member of the Anishin-abe-Ojibwe Nation in Minnesota, approved of the ban but had hoped the NCAA would take even stronger action. Brand and I larrison said they hoped school officials would pursue policy changes through the NCAA first, before going to court. UT No. 2 in coaches’ poll Southern California is practically a lock for a tliird straight national championship, so say the coaches who vote in the USA Today (baches Top 25 college football poll, released Friday. USG, 13-0 last seasson, picked up all but two of a possible 62 first-place votes. The other two went to tile University of Texas (11-1). Tennessee was ranked third, followed by Michigan, Oklahoma, louisiana State, Virginia Tech, Miami (I la.), Ohio State and Iowa. Texas A&M (7-5) was rated No. 17 and Texas Tech (8-4) came in at No. 21.
