By Melissa Johnson Staff Writer The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County has named John K. Johnson its new manager. Johnson was selected out of a pool of more than 70 applicants to head the local government authority, which works to conserve natural resources, improve public health and safety and operate public parks on the Guadalupe River and Canyon Lake. Public Relations Director and Assistant Manager Kay Cote said Johnson’s experience in recreation and maturity were what made him stand out above the rest. “I’m thrilled to be over here,” Johnson said. “This is a really interesting kind of work, and I feel like its possible for me to make a real contribution." Johnson earned his bachelor’s in physical education and health from Texas A&M University in College Station and his master’s in recreation and leisure management from the University of Utah in Salt Dike City. Johnson previously served as acting director of campus recreation for Texas State University in San Marcos, where he was responsible for the daily management of facilities, personnel, programs, activities and services. During his 20 years with the university, Johnson held numerous other positions, including associate director of campus recreation, assistant director of recreational sports and outdoor recreation and as a member of the adjunct faculty. Johnson started the Texas State outdoor recreation program in 1984 and developed the outdoor center in Sewell Park as well as the adventure trip program. He taught outdoor recreation classes during the mid-1990s. johnson said his experience at Texas State has prepared him for his current position by developing his interest in issues that surround the river and river recreation. “I ve always been someone who espoused the idea of minimal impact and leaving the river better than you found it,” Johnson said. Johnson’s current projects include adding lighting to county boat ramps and renovating the Village West boat MANDY REARY Herald-Zeitung Manager John Johnson inspects an inflatable canoe at the Water Oriented Recreation District office on River Road. ramp.
