HONORED CONTINUED FROM Page 1A MANDY REARY/Herald-Zeitung Dakotah Estes, left, Chase Akeroyd and Cody Young enjoy ice cream at the Logans Pass National Night Out party Tuesday evening. The gathering, titled BYOB for Bring Your Own Bowl or Banana, had a Hawaiian theme for neighbors to enjoy. NEIGHBORS CONTINUED FROM Page 1A Event turns strangers into friends “We look after each other’s houses when we go out of town,” he explained. “One of my neighbors has watched my puppy and another one has watered my grass.” Cousins Lesley and Trade Skarovsky, who organized the evening’s “open grill” festivities, watched the groups of chatting adults and laughing children with satisfaction. The 90 flyers Lesley made and handed out were effective — 60 people covered her front lawn with chairs and spilled out into the street in front of her house. From the party’s sign-in sheets, the cousins plan to make a community phone book to help people stay in touch. With materials from the Safe City Commission, the group will form a committee and hope to start holding regular meetings for a formal Neighborhood Watch group. Putting names with faces is the first step to a safer community, Trade said. “We’ve lived here a year, and we just wave ‘hi’ to our neighbors, but we don’t really know them,” she explained. “Now we do.” Forgery ring created $10,000 in fate checks .Safe (Jty Commission Board Member Ken Walker told the audience he was happy to be able to recognize one of New Braunfels’ finest officers. “Too many times, we focus on the negatives and don’t recognize the positive things our officers do,” he said. “This award gives us the opportunity to show the community how great these guys are. They are here to protect us.” Villarreal was honored for his role in bringing down a local forgery ring that alleged ly used computers to create nearly $10,000 in fake payroll checks its members cashed at local businesses. The investigation led to five arrests. Police Chief Russell Johnson said he was glad all his officers had an opportunity to see the public cared about their service. “A lot of times they’re not recognized for what they do in the community," he said. "Recognition like this can give them the extra incentive to excel in their jobs.” Villarreal agreed, saying the award was more than a plaque to hang on his wall. "We all work hard, but this really makes me feel appreciated,” he said. CS Tem* QMM Oldvvt Dam** lUii THE RDS HAL KETCHUM^ 3rd Annual GRIJENE REUNION Sunday 5 VJSp.CfVa P.nid Holt Hand \ uglis!
