Last week: For Kasey Kahne, the Chevy American Revolu hon 400 was sweet indeed because the 2004 Raybestos Rookie of the Year had to suffer through six sec ond place finishes before fi nally arriving in victory lane at the same track where the man he outdueled, Tony Stewart, won his first race in 1999. It was also an important first for Dodge because Kahne became the first driv er to put a Charger in the win ner's circle since the model was reincarnated this year. Kahne had to hold off Stew art for seven final green flag laps, but there were only two that mattered. Stewart made a valiant stab at the lead, but when he couldn't stick along side, Kahne roared away and left Stewart to nudge out Ryan Newman for second. It s obv ous that the same rules do not apply to everyone. ► Kasey Kahne's first victory was obviously long overdue. Now that the ice is broken, it will be interesting to see if Kahne follows it up with another victory in the near future. cam    wrap All times Eastern Nextel Cup    bVIRlf Mo vt o I AILQtiar    zrm Nextel All-Star Challenge, 9 p.m., Saturday Busch Series CarQuest Auto Parts 200, 6:30 p.m., May 28 Truck Series    myMf Quaker Steak and Lube 300, 8:30 p.m., Friday * VOCI** TURN -I • LETTERS FROM OUR READERS * ► ► It obviously meant a lot to Kahne that he won his first race by outdueling Tony Stewart, a driver with a similar background who also won for the first time at Richmond. ► Stewart's career has often been marked by controversy, but the 2002 Cup champion is as respected as anyone within the confines of the garage area. ► No one has more of a flair for the dramatic than Carl Edwards, whose exciting Busch Series vie tory at Richmond created some hard feelings but most assured ly gave the fans their money's worth. ► The Nextel All Star Challenge has rewarded young drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman among them but it s also been a showcase for greats like the late Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon, the only three time winners. ► The dominant driver at Lowe s Motor Speedway, at present, is Jimmie Johnson, but he hasn't won the Challenge ... yet. ► Stewart should also be consid ered a favorite, if for no other reason than the fact that his distinguished career does not yet include a victory in the all star race. ► What a contrast we ll see in the next two weeks. The All Star Challenge is like a local Satur daymght race, complete with segments, field inversions and spontaneous strategy moves. The fan vote is being con ducted at www.crownroyalracmg.com. Hard to figure out NASCAR’s policy on fines Come on, NASCAR! Enough is enough! Where are the fines, proba tions and possible suspensions to ward Hendrick Motorsports? Espe cially Jimmie Johnson for all the wrecks (he has) caused this year. A Hendrick driver has caused a wreck in every race this year! Once again, if that had been Tony Stewart, he would've been on probation, fined and possibly suspended. ... Is there a ... gentleman's agreement? lf so, please inform all the Cup drivers they have a right to be reckless if they "play it cool" after the race. Brian Huckeby Chesterfield, Ind. For what it s worth, we have a hard time understanding why NASCAR off/ dais penalize some drivers/teams and seem to "let it go " with others. Roush has a clear edge over his competition Ho hum. One more win for Roush. Goes to show you what money will buy. I would like for someone to ex plain (how it's) a level playing field with Roush's five cars and Hendrick's four cars against one- and two-car teams? Carl Edwards vs. Elliott Sadler Edwards won the Funai 250, Rich mond's Busch Series race, at Sadler’s expense, passing Sadler on the final lap after the two bumped twice. The two debated the issue af terward, and Sadler refused to talk to Edwards the following day at the driv ers' meeting prior to the Nextel Cup race. NASCAR This Week’s Monte Dutton gives his take "Edwards said he wouldn’t have changed a thing if he had to do it over. Sadler had extra incentive at a race in his native Virginia. It was a rough finish, but Sadler had been similarly aggres sive just moments before when he passed Johnny Sauter. Life is the pits The champ’s team wins pit-crew competition devised by crew chiefs Carl Edwards By Monte Dutton NASCAR This Week MOORESVILLE, N.C. - The National Pit-Crew Championship Presented by Tyson wasn’t the officially sanctioned NASCAR event, but it was the event put together by the actual men who change the tires and refuel the cars at Nextel Cup and Busch Series tracks all across the country. The event, envisioned and devised by the Crew Chief Club, played to a capacity crowd — about 4,000 — at the Pit Instruction and Training Facility, and none of them had to pay to get in. Fans were encouraged to make charitable donations. The event will be shown on Speed Channel on Aug. 6. The winning pit crew represented the reigning champion. Kurt Busch’s team was made up of: Mark Full (front tire carrier), Scott Ward (front tire changer), Scott Radel The Michael Waltrip NAPA Auto Parts crew runs their stop competition last week in Mooresville, N.C. (jackman), Doug Newell (fueler), Jim Gaudette (catch can), Kevin Gillman (rear tire changer), Jason Binger (rear tire carrier) and Wayne DeLoria (coach). The first-round winners were the Cup pit crews of Matt Kenseth, Michael Waltrip, Joe Nemechek, Kurt Busch, Jason Leffler, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Jeremy Mayfield, Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne, as well as the “various driver” Busch Series crews fielded by Kevin Harvick (No. 33) and Richard Childress (No. 21). The best first-round pit stop was by the McMurray crew, which changed four tires and filled a fuel tank in 15.992 seconds. McMurray’s team wound up being eliminated in the next round. The championship pit crew, representing Busch and Roush Racing, turned in a stop of 16.342 seconds. A bonus round — which could have netted one team a $500,000 bonus had one of them completed a stop in 14.436 seconds or less — went to Busch’s team, as well, though it did not manage to earn the bonus.
