Sometimes those things are injuries, accidents or illnesses. One thing is certain. They never seem to happen at convenient times, and when it comes to medical treatment for illnesses or nonlife or limb threatening injury, walk-in treatment at the office of your primary care physician isn t always convenient. A San Antonio-based urgent care system, Texas MedClinic, is making plans to open an operation in New Braunfels early next year that could provide an emergency room alternative for those afflicted with illnesses or minor injuries. The physicians at the facility will treat earaches, asthma attacks, flu, colds, sore throats, abdominal pains, strains, sprains, cuts, bruises, bites burns, scrapes, eye injuries and other illnesses or injuries. Its physicians are on the Workers’ Compensation approved doctors list, and the clinic will also treat job-related injuries and conduct physical examinations, health screenings and drug tests, including flight physicals. The facility will be built on the northbound Interstate 35 frontage road just south of Texas 46, and will be open seven days a week, year-round from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Construction is set to begin soon for an opening on Jan. 31, 2006. The site is adjacent to the Randolph-Brooks federal Credit Union drive-through. Dr. Bernard Swift, founder of Texas MedClinic, said the decision was made to open its first facility outside San Antonio in New Braunfels because its clinics in north east San Antonio were seeing lots of New Braunfels patients. “We recognized the need,” .Swift said. Karen Walker, Texas MedClinic marketing director, said Swift founded the group after working as an emergency department physician and noticing that much of the caseload was for issues that didn’t require support of a fully-staffed emergency room or hospital. “People think when they see blood they need to go to an emergency room, but they don’t,” Walker said. “Overuse of the emergency room for nonemergency problems is a real issue.” Because the clinic doesn’t require the support of a hospital emergency department and the hospital’s other services, care is less expensive. Walker said treatment typically costs 20 to 30 percent less than at a hospital. It does have its own, inhouse X-ray, and its physi cians do sutures and other minor emergency treatments not performed at the offices of many primary care physicians, Walker said. Texas MedClinic accepts many health insurance plans. Swift was a flight physician with the United States Air Ford at Randolph Air force Bast who left the military to v\ ork in hospitals in San Antonio and elsewhere in South Texas. In 1982, he opened Texas MedClinic as an alternative to expensive visits to the emergency room for prob lems that should not or cannot wait for an appointment at the doctors’ office. The first clinic was opened on Blanco Road. The most recent of eight in the San Antonio was at the forum shopping center in Live Oak. = Cleaning For Your Health • Cleaning For Your Health MANDY REARY Herald Zesting Texas MedClinic, a San Antonio based urgent-care system, is planning to open an operation in New Braunfels.Texas MedClinic could provide an emergency room alternative for those afflicted with illnesses or minor injuries.
