about God and goodwill more than they do any other It seems the nearer Christ mas the more people want to help others who are in People dig in their pockets for loose change or into their wallets for folding money to place in the Salva tion Army Red They help their churches and vari ous service clubs and organi zations with toys and cash to help brighten Christmas for the less fortu Collection boxesfor annual drives for the Comal County Sheriff Department Green Santa the New Braunfels Police Department Blue Santa program and the New Braunfels High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC Toys forTots are filled by peo ple wanting to give something to help someone Veterans organizations have programs for needy families at as do many service clubs and organizations like Eagles and Employees of some busi nesses also package and distribute clothing These programs would not exist without donations of money food and other and volunteers to do the hands on work A significant number of folks who sit by Salvation Army kettles or pack and deliver gift boxes can be found helping other folks all year Beth Dittmer is one such She is one of about 50 people who take turns ring ing a little bell at Salvation Army kettles in New Braun A member of Paul Lutheran Church in New she said the church provided several members to help the Red Kettle I ring the hand bells at but this is Dittmer I just hold it with my thumb and two fingers and move it side She was wearing a red and green elfs I usually wear a Santa but just thought Id wear this one I tell the kids I was helping Santa make the toys and took time off today to ring the she For as with many volunteering isnt a seasonal She is also a volunteer at Hope Hospice and is a member of new llth Hour program created so that No one has to die The SOS Food a min istry of New Braunfels First Protestant is operated year round entirely by volun Frances treasurer and a longtime said the SOS Food Bank is a United Way agency and also relies heavily on donations from businesses and Abel owner of Abels Diner in is vice pres ident of the food bank and contributes regularly to the food banks He also works with other First Protes tant Church volunteers to pack and deliver food boxes to needy families at Thanks giving and He said 30 boxes are needed this Not all programs have an abundance of I Have four or five people who are very close
