New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 17, 2003, New Braunfels, Texas Page 8A — Herald-Zeitung — Wednesday, December 17,2003 A-Rod, Rangers still talking with Red Sox about trade ARLINGTON, Texas (AF) — The Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox were still working Tuesday on a trade involving Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez. “At this time negotiations are at a sensitive point,” Rangers owner Tom Hick said in a statement released Tuesday evening. “Due to this fact, we will have no further comment on this situation today.” Although Rodriguez was recently named AL MVF he has more than $179 million and seven years left on his contract. He also has a notrade clause, but that s not likely to be an issue. The Red Sox are a far better team than the Rangers even without him, and he’s differed with Texas manager Buck Showalter. The Rangers want Boston to pay up to $5 million a year for the next five years to help defray Ramirez’s contract. Among the options to make the deal work include less monetary compensation, adding players and-or Alex Rodriguez turing his contract. Another prime issue for the Red Sox is what to do with incumbent shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. Trade talks are believed to be ongoing, although general manager Theo Epstein also has said the team’s first choice was to sign Garciaparra to a long-term deal. Walker could be part of lexas’ contingency plans for replacing Rodriguez. They've talked to Walker’s agent about signing him to play second, which would mean moving second baseman Michael Young to shortstop. Veteran defenders pulled from the expansion draft? Check. Young, talented offensive skill players gathered through two rookie drafts? Check. Solid kick specialists signed in free agency? Check. The upshot has been the modest improvement the Texans expected this season. Even if their 5-9 record becomes 5-11 after home games against the heavily favored Tennessee and Indi anapolis to end the season, it still will be a one-win improvement from last year. And they’ll do it having lost 15 players to injury since last spring, including former Pro Bowl performers Tony Boselli, Gary Walker and Aaron Glenn. That list doesn’t count the five starts David Carr has missed, including the last four with a sprained right shoulder. A softer schedule, more experience on offense and better luck with injuries — it can’t get much worse — will allow the Texans to go into 2004 with reasonable expectations to contend for the Is your water softener throwing money down the drain? Journeymen Jerry Deloach, Corey Sears, Steve Martin and others have filled in admirably, but the Texans must make replenishing the unit a priority. Houston might be forced to cut Walker if they can’t agree on a renegotiated contract to avoid a $13.5 million salary cap hit next season, further thinning the group. A key to their decision-making could be how confident they are that Payne, who blew out his left knee in Week 2, will be IOO percent by next summer. If Payne rounds back into form and the Texans can resign Steve Martin to back him up at nose tackle, that leaves them free to concentrate on defensive end. Free agent possibilities who seem to fit the Texans’ system include the Titans’ Robaire Smith, the Eagles’ Paul Grasmanis — recovering from his own knee surgery — and Buccaneers star Warren Sapp, whose mouthiness and high cost make him an unlikely choice.
