board of the Sophienburg Museum and Archives now called The Sophien burgNew Braunfels Archives and Museum of History was searching for an idea for a fundraiser Berger was serving on the board at the time and had lived in many for several years She present ed the idea of an annual German Christmas market to the board After doing ayear of research Weih nachtsmarkt was born They do these types of markets all the time in Germany but they are outdoor Berger said They have booths made out of wood with a covering on top There are heaters inside the booths for the vendors but people do not walk Helgard is from Germahyahdfe she said Weihnachtsmarkt means Christmas night market in Ger Berger said With thehelp ofVlce Chairperson Sherri Ruben Berger got the market underway The goal of the market was raise funds for the Sophienburg and to preserve the heritage of New Braunfels It was such a success that the Sophienburg made a profit during the very first year The market grossed of which went back into the market fund and was paid to the Sophienburg after the museum and archives loaned out that amount to help get the event start ed That left a net profit of Everyone said it would be four or five year before we started making Berger said It just the right Shoppers continue to flock to the market each year to find artwork home furnishings and ddcor cloth ing Christmas decorations sweets and gifts This past year the Christ mas market raised nearly for the Sophienburg Berger thought another key rea son the market was so successful was because the vendors were treated differently a percentage of all vendor sales Berger credited the continued success of the Christmas market to the ideas of the chairmen who fol lowed her Ideas such as the Christ mas cookie decorating and Scherenschnitte paper German Christmas ornament making class es and the Drop and Shop childcare have brought additional visitors to the show The Sophienburg Museums gift Shop featuring glass German Christmas orna ments is one of the main attrac tions Berger has her own Weihnachts markt tradition that she shares with DAVID LASSES Classes free admis sion and materials are sup plied but reservations are 10 Saturday Scherenschnitte making paper German Christmas ornaments 2 Saturday Christmas cookie decorating OOD EATS Sophies m during Weihnachtsmartcf hours and serving home made desserts and soup her daughter and daughterinlaw She never works during the Thurs day preview party That is reserved for the three girls to get in their shopping time Kuehler said the preview gala always sells out It features a buffet raffle and silent auction Tickets are per person or per couple Another favorite of Weihnachts markt shoppers is Sophies Kaffee Haus which serves a selection of homemade soups chicken tortilla potato and enchilada soup and desserts The event also includes an opportunity for pictures with Santa and a chance to order Christmas poinsettias The Plant Haus is helping us out with the Kuehler said Shoppers can come in and order a gift certificate for their poinsettias and then pick them up at the Plant Haus by Dec 12 That way they dont have to worry about carrying around the plants while they shop at Weihnachtsmarkt And The Plant Haus is giving the promts to This years Weihnachtsmarkt is expected to bring in more than 40 vendors McClinton A quick
