Barnes said Ford had done more for the Longhorns program in two years than anyone whos come before Royal Ivey is the guy who comes after him Ivey takes over the point guard duties that Ford ran to perfection in last seasons run to the Final Four Texas first in 56 years The 12tirankecl Longhorns open the season Monday night at home against Brown Its my turn to run the Ivey said Replacing one player pri a team that returns four starters four seniors and a wealth of depth should be a snap just plug in the new guy and go especially when its Ivey a senior who started 26 games at the point as a fresh man before Ford arrived But Ford was the engine that His speed on the dribble was unmatched and his ability to slash to the basket and pass to an open teammate drew gasps from fans More than one Longhoro took one in the face when they werent expecting the ball He won the Naismith and Wooden awards as the top player in college basketball In just two years Ford climbed to second on the schools career assists chart with 527 and led Texas in scoring with 15 points a game last season His burst of speed upcourt with the ball changed Texas from Barnes usual defensefirst approach to a runandgun transition attack on offense Im notTJ Ivey said Im Royal Ivey Just be solid make good decisions and play within myself I wont be asked to do it all IveyS still relatively new to the position He didnt play point guard in high school and moved there only when Barnes needed him to three years ago I never played the point until I got to college and they threw me into the said Ivey 1 didnt even know all the plays as a Barnes expects to help Jvey by moving the ball around Even though he knows all the plays now Ivey wont be expected to run every offen sive set like Ford did Were not asking one guy to handle the ball 90 percent of the said Barnes who said he wont back off the up tempo style Defense is where Ivey excels and is one area Texas might be improved this sea son At just 5foot11 Ford sometimes struggled against more physical players Ivey is 63 and has already established himself as the teams best defender typical ly guarding an opponents best offensive player He
