The New Braunfels Police Department and the Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni Association will work again this year to fill the gap for IOO needy families with their annual Blue Santa program. Chief of Police Russ Johnson said that for some families this holiday season, Santa Claus won’t be the jolly fat man in the beard and red suit — he’ll be a New Braunfels police officer in a blue uniform and a patrol car. “For many families and especially for their children, LOANS from $100 lo $510 CREDIT STARTER I OANS NO COLI ATE RAI HI QIMRE ( ' I HAR' ' ' I’AN01 Corm by or call: Aoootto 6. The shopper buys the gift and leaves it in a Blue Santa drop box. Blue Santa depends on monetary donations for the gifts that go unpurchased, Jankowski said. “Last year, the community purchased 90 percent of our needed items. We need donations to buy the rest,’’ she said. Blue Santa is a nonprofit program. Receipts can be provided for tax purposes if needed, Jankowski said. “This is a very important program for a lot of our needy families in our community,’’ Jankowski said. Blue Santa will be the only true Christmas, as far as gifts are concerned,” Johnson said. “Members of the police department and the citizens’ police academy are working hard to generate donations. We’re asking the public to do what they can to support this program.” For Johnson, who moved here from Colorado in 2002, last Christmas was the First in which he’d ever seen the Blue Santa program. Johnson’s predecessor, retired Chief Ray Douglas and his wife, Chris, operated it for years. Johnson said it was moving to see the effect on his officers of participating in the program — and the good it does. “It was quite rewarding to see the smiles on some of these children’s faces when officers brought these gifts to them,’’ Johnson said. “I hope the public will help us support this program.” Blue Santa Director Cissy Jankowski, of the Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni /Xssociation, said 345 children in IOO families were helped in 2002. She said she hoped a similar number would get gifts this year. The Communities in Schools program selects the families who are Elided by Blue Santa. “Once they’re selected, the parents are given a wish list Russ JohnsonSunday, November 2, 2003 — Herald-Zeitung — Page 7A patrol for giftsADVERTISE With over 53.000 newspapers printed and distributed locally every week.How can New Hmm mi lsHkkald-Zeitung   _ ;
