made great progress in thi fight against breast cancer Research education and screening continue to bring us closer to a cure This is good news especially considering that here in Texas alone there will be about new cases this year Early detection is our best defense so I cant stress enough these simple steps Perform a monthly selfexam regardless of your age Notify your doctor if you notice a lump thickening swelling or unusual tenderness nipple discharge dimpling pain or changes in the breast tissue Get a mammogram every year starting at age 40 Let your doctor know if someone in your family has or has had breast cancer October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month set I urge every woman over 40 to get a yearly mammogram Its that important because the earliest signs of breast cancer can show up on mammo grams before physical symptoms occur If you are diagnosed with cancer ask your physician to refer you to an oncologist for optimal treatment planning At Hematology Oncology
