Before Lance Armstrong and I can begin thinking about the 2004 Tour de we are going to spend some time enjoy ing his fifth Taking the time to recognize and cele brate a huge accomplishment is critical to continued success because it reinforces the passion an ath lete must have in order to win a race like the Tour de You cant win the Tour de France through strategy and ARMSTRONG tactics For a portion of the Tours second week this Lance was racing entirely with his head and not with his Things hadnt gone his he was and he needed to find the momentum that would again carry him to Paris in the yellow From a coachs Lance had the physical con ditioning to take control cf the Tour de but he needed to rediscover his emo tional connection to the Lance is an extremely pow erful and when he is fired up about racing and he places value on an accom he can attack with a ferocity that is frightening in its Chris Carmicheal has been Lance Armstrongs cycling coach for the past five Outdoors Patience is the key to setting the hook with topwater plugs Bad habits are hard to especially when it comes to Learning to bass my father taught me to set the hook Cross his hed This quick hook set method worked well when fishing with a plastic things were different Back fishing rods typically had softer actions and it did require hard hook Otherwise the fish would drop the lure prior to the hook being penetrated in its Todays heavy action rods are specifically designed so quick hook penetration is possible without such a violent hook Plus todays super like Berkleys have vir tually no stretch and hook penetration is Last week I fished topwater lures day long catching My partner had just as many strikes as I yet he boated far few was hjg ba4 habit KEITH WARREN the Fishing along steep we had located an area where good sized bass seemed to be bunched The fish would take a subsurface lure but they would hit a topwater bait more When having a I would rather catch a fish on a topwater Seeing the lure working along the anticipating a strike at any second causes the angler to be extremely focused so much so that when tibe strike occurs it startles the anglers natural reaction is to set the hook Problems occur during the hook set that are often times over looked by the fish will many times completely miss the A hook set will move the lure out of the strike zone and away from the aggressive Merely tighten your line to see if the fish is If simply reel it If manip ulate the lure trying not to move it too If the fish doesnt hit it quickly speed up your retrieve for a short distance then stop The lure will appear to be trying to escape from the fish and then A lot of thats when if 11 get But dont set the Heres a couple of suggestions if you have a problem pulling the lure away from the fish too Use a lighter action The soft tip will keep the lure stationary slightly try closing your This way you wont react to the strike as My partner had a hard time even though he said he was following my I knew he was not closing his eyes because his hook sets were too The sun was setting and the fish were really But he continued miss ing Lets Ive had Bad habits are tough to he I told him we would fish until dark then get off the Once darkness swallowed us up he started boating fish on the He could no longer see the strike and his catch ratio went up Next fish well go I said No I have finally got the hang of this topwater fishing and were not going as he boated a five Keith Warren ia the host of two weekly out door television programs thai broadcast nation
