New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - June 27, 2003, New Braunfels, Texas Page 4B — Hkrald-Zkitung — Friday, June 27, 2003 SCHLITTERBAHN/From 1B K. JESSIE SLATEN/Herald-Zeitung New Braunfels Aquatic Club team member Becca Zeitler practices her backstroke Wednesday afternoon at Landa Park Pool. personal best times and 92 percent of all swimmers who signed up for the meet, held true to their commitment. Dallmann’s repeated pleas to see the community recognize swimming as a revenue generator, has fallen on deaf ears, but he’s as persistent as his swimmers. “It’s time we begin to lobby again, to try to secure an indoor pool," Dallman said. Motivated by their own selfesteem, rather than a state-of-the art oasis, team leader John Quinn sets the bench mark for the Dolphins and will showcase his state-qualifying talents for the locals this weekend. “He’s one of my outstanding swimmers. His strength Is the distance events and he earned a spot in the high school state meet in just his junior year,” Dallmann said. Quinn’s efforts set the table for those who want to follow in his wake and that would include the middle member of the Duckworth family tri-fecta that includes 11-year-old Christopher and 17-year-old Kip. “In a meet like Schlitter-bahn you’re never sure about the overall competition, but I know my prime competition comes from my teammate John,(Quinn)” said Sean Duckworth, who began swimming competitively at age six and will compete at the high school level as a sophomore for the Unicorns swimming PRE SUMMER CLEARANCE SALE WHI OVER .3 0 0 HEED CARS PRICED TO SELL A U T O M AT IC I <£> FORD ESCORT SE E 6,995/Odn i ^129*mo ' 4-Cvl I pgirw ’ Automatic 1 Air ( nm! L USED VEmCLES team next semester. Duckworth will be penciled in the 200 individual medley, the IOO freestyle and the IOO backstroke. “The challenge with Schlit-terbahn comes from the fact that there are teams I haven’t seen all year. There’s the uncertainty of not knowing who you’re going to be up against that makes it challenging and fun,” added Duckworth. While Scan has aspirations of securing a scholarship, older sister Kip, a senior this fall, would welcome a top-IO finish in any of her events and admits her talent level at best, would earn her a walk-on invite to a college campus. ‘The swimmers I’m going against have all been at it since they were in early grade school. You don’t see swimmers on the competitive high school level, just beginning to start at 12 or 13. That’s really the age that competitive swimmers begin to perfect their strokes, but it takes years of practice,” Kip said.
