global flair BY CHRIS SHERIDAN AP Basketball Writer SAN ANTONIO AP In the land of the Alamo and the 10gallon hat the Western Conference finals are being decided in large part by a French point guard and an Argen tine reserve Meici Tony Parker for bringing some love for France from folks in President Bushs home state Ole Manu Ginobili for showing not all from Argentina is as deval ued as those pesos tucked in your wallet The San Antonio Spurs are on the verge of defeating the Dallas Mavericks and advancing to the NBA Finals while also making con verts of any remaining state side diehards who believe inter national players are a notch below their American counterparts Anybody who saw Ginobilis baseline reverse dunk in Game 4 should be a believer by now Anyone who has witnessed Parkers extreme speed and improved jump shot must agree Im not trying to prove some thing to Parker said skew ering his English but getting a point across GINOBILII Parker went on TNTs live postgame show after Game 3 and was told he had been named to People maga zines list of the worlds 50 Most Beautiful He made Charles Barkley laugh by replying he now feels obligated to shave every day which is very un French This is a point guard who turned 21 last couple days before he scored 19 of his 29 points in a quarter to help the Spurs win Game 3 Parker scored 25 in Game PARKER Cards stomp Astros 105 ST LOUIS AP Woody Williams became the second sevengame winner in the National League and Scott Rolen was 3for3 with three RBIs as the St Louis Cardi nals beat the Houston Astros 105 Monday J D Drew hit a coach Don Nelson said They have so many people its hard to curtail all of How the Spurs got Parker and Ginobili is a good story in itself Parker was the 28th and final firstround pick in 2001 going long after Cleveland selected DeSagana Diop eighth the Hornets took Kirk Hasten 18th and the 76ers chose Samuel Dalembert 26th Ginobilis draft number was ridiculously lower the 57th pick in 1999 San 5A State Semifinals at Red McCombs Field in Austin They will be looking to knock of the defending state champs Smithson Valley preparing for Bryan in semifinal BY BRETT BACA Staff Writer When Smithson Valleys season abruptly ended this past year on a controversial twoout gameending single in the seventh inning of the UIL 4A State Championship game against Frisco it ended the Rangers chance of becoming the first ever high school softball team from the state of Texas to repeat as champions Now this year as Smithson Valley 245 prepares to take on Bryan 322 this past years Class 5A champion in the UIL 5A State Semifinal game at 8 Friday at McCombs Field in Austin they have a chance to return the favor that Frisco handed to them this past season But Smithson Valley head coach Wayne Daigle is quick to point out that there is no added motivation for the Rangers going into the game Were not going to be trying any harder to win the game than if we were playing team Daigle said The Rangers will not be facing team XYZ instead they will be facing a team very similar to their own Bryan won the 5A title thia past year with a 10 victory over San Antonio OConnor Smithson Valley won the 4A title in 2001 with a 51 victory over Hallsville And both teams have had current success on the field Bryan will be making its fourth state appearance since 1996 and Smithson Valley also making its fourth state appearance made the state tournament three out of the past four years in 4A before moving up to 5A The similarities dont end there This season both teams graduated numerous seniors with Smithson Val ley returning only three starters and Bryan only two Both teams had a rough start to the season losing a cou ple of games they were not supposed to but both teams bounced back Bryan has won its final 17 games while Smithson Valley has won 21 of its final 23 See San Antonio at Dallas 8 If nee essary r Dallas at Sari Antonio If necessary TICKETS 210 2233865 Sixers coach Brown resigns PHILADELPHIA AP Larry Brown hasnt lost his passion for coaching He just felt ho and the Philadelphia 76ers needed a change Brown resigned as coach of the 76ers on Monday after six oftenturbulent seasons in which he helped rebuild a struggling franchise This has been com ing for a Brown said at a news conference I kind of thought in the mid dle of the season that we needed a change a fresh look And thats been on my mind A Hall of Famer and one of basketballs most welltrav eled coaches Brown could be a candidate for coaching vacancies in Cleveland Hous ton and elsewhere The 76ers released Brown from a contractual clause that prohibited him from coaching another NBA team if he left Philadelphia pre maturely Brown had two years left in his contract that paid him million per sea son A lot of jobs are open but I just left a great Brown said Im going to sit back try to get with my family and figure out whats best for Browns job with the 76ers was his longest tenure with any team in his 31year coaching career He led them to the playoffs five straight seasons including the 2001 NBA Finals and will coach the mens national team this summer at an Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico BROWN Outdoors Saltwater fishing provides anglers with nonstop fishing action Variety of species and you never know whats biting these are the reasons many anglers give when asked why they prefer saltwater fishing over freshwater Another common reason is that their seems to be more fish available for the saltwater angler It is rare when an average saltwater angler spends the entire day without a bite Recently we had a coastal saltwater trip where variety of species took on a new mean ing My partner for the day was Doug Williams from Athens Texas Doug primari ly fishes for freshwater species but has been saltwater fishing before The wind was calm and the water was a beautiful color With bait jumping around us we caught lots of trout and big redfish It was a topwater bite like I had never seen before It seemed everything was feeding on the bait KEITH WARREN When the topwater bite slowed we switched to soft plastics The action continued and we even caught flounder and hardhead catfish on our lures rarely do hardheads take But this was a genuine feeding frenzy I have often said that the difference between freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing is fish relate to cover and saltwater fish relate to bait Find the bait and feeding fish wont be too far away We had boxed quite a few fish and were well on our way to our limits when the bait action went slack Consequently the fish catching ceased We decided to make a move hoping to locate more feeding activity As the boat skimmed across the water we noticed something unusual looking on the surface We turned around for a better look and found a huge snake coiled It appeared to be injured so we took a closer look It was a giant water snake approximately 5 feet long and it had something big inside it On its back were several red marks that appeared to be the cause of its injury The snake was near death so we decided to inves tigate what it had swallowed Turns out a 13 long hardhead catfish was in the snake It had swallowed the fish tail first and the catfishes pectoral and dorsal fins had prevented the snake from being able to pass it through its body The sores on the snake were cause from puncture wounds cre ated by the fishes fins After taking some photos Doug said Youre right about saltwater fishing When you find the bait everythings Keith Warren ia the host of Fishing Out door
