Ive always helped put up flags,” Stewart said. Comal County Veterans Service Officer Michaels Davis, a U.S. Air Force veteran, considers it her duty to help put up the flags on a day set aside to remember the sacrifices of men and women who have served in the armed forces. “Its to honor the veterans that have died,” Davis said. She also said it was fun. Pointing to her 11 -year-old son. Mason, she said a project like this gets she and her children out of the house to work together on something of value. “I do this every year with VFW 11050 and with Post 35. It’s just being patriotic,’’said duan Tristan. He Herved in the U.S. Army in Vietnam (1908-09) with the 22nd Engineers. Konkel said the project could trace its beginnings to the early 1900s when some businesspeople got together and created a flag commit tee. Each business owner was charged $15 to display the flags. The idea did not catch on. The bank owning the note on the flags was preparing to sell them, so Post 35 bought t he 185 flags for the price of the debt. They’ve been displayed on every flag-flying day since then, Konkel said. ()ver the years, some of the flags have been stolen, Konkel said. Now there are just 135. That bothered Konkel. It also irked him that at athletic events people don’t honor the flag. “When I see people scratching at football games when they’re supposed to be respecting the flag, that’s enough to make a veteran’s blood boil,” he said. When his country was at war in Korea, “We’re proud of that flag,” Konkel said “Every casket that comes hack bearing someone killed in a war comes back draped in the flag that a serviceman has sacrificed himself for.” photos by DAVID INGRAM/Herald-Zeitung (Above) Taylor Davis is careful not to let Old Glory touch the ground while helping American Legion Post 35 members place flags Monday morning around Main Plaza for Memorial Day.
