adopting units BY SEAN BOWUN Staff Writer The fighting in Iraq is pret ty much over but that hasnt stopped a local beauty school from adopting two units of troops Like many local and national organizations and businesses the Seguin School of Beautys New Braunfels branch on San Antonio Street is showing its concern for the needs of deployed soldiers by sending them hard to get per sonal items Its a personal said school Manager Mary Castilleja The items are going to the sailors aboard the Navy destroyer USS Gushing through Brian Pullin whose mother Mary Cortez is a longtime school customer And Cortexs daughter Cody Cork asks community to help out food drive BY RON MALONEY Staff Writer Mayor Adam Cork joined County Judge Danny Scheel Tuesday in seeking commu nity support for this years letter carriers food drive issuing a special challenge to local community service orga nizations I want to encourage every one to participate in the food Cork said Tuesday at a news con ference con ducted with Scheel and letter carri er Don McBroom Postal Ser vice carriers around the Unit ed States will collect millions of pounds of food on May 10 The food will be distributed to community food banks In Comal County food col lected would go to food banks in Canyon Lake and New Braunfels Its not difficult to do and will show what a big heart this community Cork said McBroom said all those who can donate need do is leave nonperishable food wherever they pick up their mail on May 10 Put it by your mailbox door slot or cluster box and the letter carriers will do the McBroom said You can also bring it to the post office lobby Well have ham pers in McBroom said this years food drive comes at a time when the local food banks face serious depletion They always have to buy perishable items milk bread but this year theyre having to buy canned goods as well just to keep their shelves McBroom said The food banks are running down to bare shelves this Scheel said In light of the disasters and layoffs last year local resources have been stretched Cork mentioned his Lions Club whkh he said had par ticipated in programs to gath er food for the food bank in New Braunfels J want to challenge the ser vice dubs to participate as well and find their own ways to donate the mayor said So Danny your Rotary clubs on notice Were going to outcollect Cork promised Schbel took the challenge but he said he thought the con test should be conducted on a percapita basis Wait a SchetJ said Your clubs three timea big ger than Cork told the judge htd bet ter get to work CORK Lee Zach is in the 297th Transport Company based at Ft Hood Castilleja talked about the customers We have some of them soldiers that have been stu dents here in the past and also some of our customers have children that are there in And we have a lot of older she said Because of those ties Castilleja said the idea occurred to her to do some thing to help support troops So we just got some pack ages together and just started writing them letters and sending them things that they she said Castilleja decided to mail personal items to the troops many of whom left in such a rush that they didnt have time to acquire a staple of personal goods And they havent had much opportuni ty overseas to replace what they carried with them Theres not a lot of places over there to get the kind of items they Castilleja said So she said the beauty school mailed Pullin his fel low sailors and Cortez and her fellow soldiers five boxes of different things they can use shampoo conditioner hard candy deodorant tooth paste Gatorade pretty scarce there but they need to keep up their Castilleja let ters and socks Beauty school employee Lydia Rodriguez also sent crackers candy and stuffed animals We feel 100 percent she said of the effort We support them 100 Rodriguez said she doubts she could put up with being deployed Castilleja said the first two of the five boxes were assem bled and sent within a week The staff had a lot of help from people coming by the school and donating items They know we support them and are proud of the school manager said Castilleja said her emotions about the deployment of troops overseas are mixed Tm really proud that we can go help people who sin cerely need it and they do need Castilleja said of the effort to Liberate Iraq from Saddam Husseins rule They have a ruler almost like Hitler and so I felt that someone needed to go and help those Castilleja is grateful for the release of the POWs But she also bemoans the loss of American troops shot by Iraqis and left in shallow graves Pullin and Zachs father Joe Cortez said hes glad Bri an and Cody Lee are doing their duty But he has hia con cerns Im proud of what theyre doing but being a parent I just worry a lot I
