drinking driving BY SEAN BOWLIN Staff Writer Four times an hour 24 stu dents at New Braunfels High School learned the chilling truth about drunk driving Friday The program Every 15 was sponsored by the NBHS the National Asso ciation of Student Councils and Mothers Against Drunk Driving What we are doing is illus trating to the students that while were here in school approximately 24 people will be killed in drunk driving ac cidents and the most uni que thing about it is letting that a lot of the people killed in the accidents are not necessarily the dri said faculty sponsor Julie Estes So the respon sibility of their drinking and driving is a huge After a general announce ment about the program in the morning student Jere my Bartlett who played the Grim Reaper visited class rooms throughout the day One by one students who a greed to participate in the program were taken out of class They had their faces painted white to symbolize death Tombstones with their names birth and death dates were placed in the schools planter The tombstones in the lustrated impaired vision at three different bloodalcohol levels And members of the crimi nal justice club were giving sobriety tests I think its really effective especially when they see the Grim Reaper come in and take the student out and then they come back Robyn Triesh said I really like the program because you get to teach the school about the alcohol and Allie Cook said We try to inform them about what theyre doing to them selves when they do drugs and drink alcohol They stu dents realize it could hap pen to them and their friends So itte really real life But Estes sounded like she wasnt convinced that the message had registered Im amazed at the num ber of students who dont think theyre doing anything wrong when they drink and then choose to she said Tm just hoping that if this makes one student make a decision not to get behind the wheel of a car or not to get in a car with someone who has been drinking its been effec Estes said A SPECIAL INVITATION Sean Bowlin The Grim Reaper played by Jeremy Barttett takes another New Braunfels High School student out class Friday during a special daylong program designed to help students understand the dangers of drinking and driving planter keeping increasing every 15 minutes so I hope thats a visual Es tes said Estes said the students who represented drunkdriving victims agreed to go for the rest of the school day without speaking so that other stu dents could better under stand the impact of their loss I think its really good be cause they are teaching peo ple not to drink and drive especially on spring said Amanda Van Guilder as Joy Evans 246 W San Antonio St 6066707 v tn si 1rtr Evenings by Appointment B umthitum 1857 Licensed Experienced
