Israels election Tuesday and TV pro jections showed his Likud and other hawkish parties easily winning most seats in parliament The prospect of progress on the Palestinian front now appears to depend on whether Sharon can form a coalition that will include the opposi tion Labor party which campaigned on a pledge to restart peace negotia tions with the Palestinians Troops clash with rebel fighters in Afghan battle BAGRAM Afghanistan AP Hundreds of troops pressed toward rebel fighters in rugged moun tain caves Tuesday while warplanes bombed enemy positions in the fiercest battle in Afghanistan in nearly a year At least 18 rebels were killed in the assault The military believes the fighters are loyal to renegade warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar a powerful strongman who has vowed to ilink his forces with remnants of al iiQaida and the ousted Taliban regime raises specter of taking tougher line on Iraq KIEV Ukraine AP Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Tuesday that Moscow which has con sistently pushed for a diplomatic solu tion to the crisis with Iraq may change its position if Baghdad ham pers weapons inspectors In London British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the damning and dis turbing report by weapons inspectors Monday proved Iraq was in material breach or violation of a disarmament resolution and made war more likely It was the first time Britain branded Iraq in material breach since inspectors resumed their work in November And in the Arab world Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak issued a vivid and grim warning that war will come unless Iraq abides by the resolu tions of international legitimacy and ceases to put obstacles in front of the international inspection Texas Lotto SATURDAY million WEDNESDAY million 172528MM248 Contact Us HERALDZEITUNG 707
