and past a defender during a game played earlier this season The Unicorns opened district play against Fredericksburg late Monday night Welcome to the Swashbucklers Super Bowl in San Diego BY BARRY WILNER AP Football Writer SAN DIEGO AP Welcome to the swash bucklers Super Bowl with Jon Gruden subbing for Errol Flynn Bill Callahan in the Tyrone Power role and Al Davis as Captain Hook The Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Bucca neers sailed into San Diego with their pirates logos and their bloodthirsty images the Raiders on offense the Buccaneers on defense For the next few days their similarities and vast differ ences will be dissected By the time they take the field Sunday America will know everything about Oaklands storied past and Tampa Bays sorry one For 19 years the Raiders have tried to get back to the title game Thats nothing compared to Tam pa Bays pursuit of respectability let alone cham pionships Funny thing about football though The past isnt necessarily prologue Matchups injuries luck all play a bigger role than mystiqufc and misery It was ovw history said AllPro tackle SAPP Warren Sapp We cant do this we cant do that Its cold it might snow the field was not good Everything but man on Ah man on man especially when other teams have the ball and the Bucs can impose their will Think of a daring Flynn slashing his way through well a regiment of Raiders Think of these brash Bucs and their topranked defense slowing down the NFLs No 1rated offense Its a far cry from what everyone came to expect from one of pro sports most downtroddden franchises But you look at it and everything people were talking about didnt have anything to do with foot Sapp added Not exactly The talk was about football bad football an 014 debut season 26 straight losses before a victory two solid decades of unprece dented failure and when they finally turned things around an inability to get this far These however are the new Bucs the Gruden Bucs Gruden was uh pirated away from Oakland for a very handsome booty of million and four draft choicer sent to theRaiders At the time some said he was leaving Oakland Coliseums Black Hole for another a black hole of an orga nization But he was just what Tampa Bay needed pro viding the impetus for this Super Bowl run with his hardcharging style something the Bucs obvi ously lacked while falling flat in the playoffs under Tony Dungy If he would tell me to jump off the Walt Whit man Sapp said following the NFC cham pionship victory in Philadelphia I would jump When Gruden jumped ship Callahan whom lie hired moved from the supporting cast to a starring role Hes overseen a significant increase in t he Raiders offensive potency they scored 450 points during the season and have 71 in two play off games Moat important to
