I) Lindheimer, who edited the paper for nearly 20 years, said in his final editorial: “As far as I know, I myself have never made use of the columns in this paper for personal defense, because I consider the newspaper an auditorium for public opinion and the property of the public and not an instrument for private parties. I have never spoken against my conviction... My political opponents have nevertheless honored me with the title “Lugenheimer”(liar) but have never made use of my offer to publish proof of the accusation in the New Braunfelser Zeitung, though they have frequently been invited to do so. Perhaps never did a Roman say with more conviction, ‘Happy is he who is negotiating his retirement,,’ then I who say goodbye to the ROSEMARIE LEISSNER Gregory newspaper business”... Lindheimer died December 2, 1879 at the age of 78... The files from Volume 2 to 69, which contain the substitute paper are preserved in the State Library in Austin. The first volume is in the Sophienburg Museum here. Volume 70 and subsequent ones are preserved in the basement vaults of the First National Bank here... In 1871, Anselm Eiband succeeded Lindheimer as editor. After Eiband’s death in 1884, Ernest Koebig managed t he paper for two years. The next owners and editors were Julius Halm and A.G. Startz, who were succeeded by Lundolph Lafrentz. In the early 90s Eugene Railer became editor, Caph Julius Giesecke, business manager... In 1899. Ben F. Nebergall, who had been employed by the Zeitung from his 14th year, bought an interest in the business, and G.F. Oheim joined the partnership as editor. Captain Giesecke later sold his interest to the partners and they continued with the paper until their deaths. G.F. Oheim relinquished the editorship in 1941 due to his health, being succeeded by his son Frederic, and died in 1947. Mr. Nebergall, at the time of his death in 1948, had been actively associated with the publication of the Zeitung for 60 years... The Zeitung is now owned and edited by Frederic Oheim, who had been with it in every capacity from printer’s devil to editor for more than 30 years. Alfred dung Cell phone opponents caught driving while being distracted DEAR ABBY: I would like to share a recent experience with those of your readers who are anti-cell phone. I understand the anxiety concerning motorists who use cell phones. I was recently on the freeway and found myself following a van that had a bumper sticker that read, “Shut up and drive!” with a picture of a cell phone. The van unexpectedly swerved to one side and braked as though the driver was alarmed. I wondered if something was wrong (I am a medical practitioner) and cautiously crept up alongside. When I looked in, I saw a family with the husband driving. The wife was holding a container of ketchup for him to dip his fries into while he held a hamburger with the other hand. At one point, she even shifted gears for him! Abby, I was appalled. I still can’t get over the absurdity. How hypocritical for those people to have a bumper sticker criticizing drivers who use cell phones, while actually doing something more dangerous themselves. I waited for my chance to shake a finger at them, but they were too busy eating and passing food around to notice. — COMMUTER IN VANCOUVER, WASH. DEAR COMMUTER: According to the literature I have seen regarding the use of cell phones behind the wheel, the driver is as “impaired” as someone who has had three shots of alcohol. Not a happy Dear Abby thought. However, people driving on public roads using no hands and expecting a passenger to do the gear-shifting are beyond the pale — a danger to themselves and others. lh receive a collection of Ab bys poems and essays, send a business-sized, self-addressed envelope, plus cheek or money order for $5 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Abby — Keepers Booklet, P.O.
