Douglas said the city has eight additional officers this year on the streets during the winter months. Four of those officers will be used to patrol the rivers during the summer tourism season. Additional maintenance for patrol cars and gas costs were taken into account at budget time. Those figures could increase at any time, he said. FIRE PROTECTION For the most part, residents in newly annexed areas will not see any difference in fire protection — New Braunfels’ fire department covers their areas under an agreement with Comal and Guadalupe Counties, Chief Jack Collier said. One difference might exist, Collier acknowledged. Most of the city’s neighborhoods have fire hydrants — although in older parts of the city, the water mains aren’t large enough to make them really effective. Newly annexed areas won’t have fire hydrants, which are placed by New Braunfels Utilities. But that won’t make any difference to fire safety in the Dear Abby Invitations create sticky situation DEAR ABBY: I am writing on behalf of my sister, “Hazel,” who is too embarrassed to write. Shes pregnant with her first child. Her two best friends are giving her a baby shower. Hazel registered for gifts at a national store that provides stickers that say, “Registered at ( ),” to be put on the invitation envelopes. Hazel didn’t take them because she thinks the practice is tacky. Her friends asked her for the stickers, and she told them she didn’t want to use them. She felt that when her guests called to RSVP, they could be told where she’s registered. WeU, her friends went to the store, got stickers, and put them on her invitation envelopes anyway. Hazel is very upset. She wants the hosts to tell the guests they used the stickers against her wishes. These “friends” think she is being hormonal and overly sensitive, and insist that this is proper etiquette. Do you think putting the stickers on the envelopes was a breach of etiquette? — STUCK IN SAN FRANCISCO DEAR STUCK: Ignoring the expressed wishes of the honoree was a worse breach of etiquette. neighborhoods, he said. “All of our fire-fighting rigs have tanks that carry water,” Collier said. ‘Tn addition, we have an 1,800-gallon water tanker that we can send into areas without traditional fire hydrants. We have a folding tank we can fill with that water, while we send the tanker back to the closest hydrant to fill up.” Collier said the service in the areas will be exactly the same — it’s what residents receive now. ‘Tt’s the service on the same level they’ve received for years,” he said. ‘We provide fire and EMS protection, and that won’t drop at all.” The state’s annexation laws require that the city provide services at the same level currently received by city residents. City Attorney Charlie Zech said the fire protection would be the same — despite the fact that newly annexed areas don’t have fire hydrants. “My position is the same as it was at the public hearing,” he said. “It’s a matter of semantics. We have to provide fire protection — a tanker trunk and a fire hydrant is the same level of service. The only difference is the way that it is given.” While annexation may not Click on us — www.herald-zeitung.com Larry Taylor Debby Taylor Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialists Hearing and Balance Innovations Clinic Promoting independent living through belter hearing and fall pretention. Union Ave, Ste. 335 30RJ7MI ggil'lisl require additional firefighters, equipment or buildings, Collier said the department is looking at areas to expand in order to meet growing needs. “We discussed renovating the Kerlick Fire Station during the budget process,” he said. “And I’ve gotten estimates that show it will take about $50,000 to $100,000 to renovate the building. It needs a new roof and needs to be remodeled on the inside.” The cost isn’t high, he said. But nearly $1 million is needed to equip and add personnel for a new station, he said. The department needs about $350,000 for a new truck, and costs of equipping and adding 12 firefighters to the station runs about $500,000, he said. The administration also needs room to expand, Collier said. In the 2002 budget, council allocated $250,000 for the administration to find a new building. The fire administration is currently located at the municipal building. “My first choice is the old police headquarters across the street from the municipal building,” he said. “With $250,000, we could completely renovate the building and move into it. You can’t find land or build a new building with that amount of money.” Collier expects to have an answer for the fire administration by this fall. Times Good Frl. Aug 17th - Thurs.
