New Braunfels will begin its season tonight against Churchill and Westwood. the junior varsity team during the same season. During the club seasons in the past few years, most of the players were scattered among area teams. Smithson Valley finished second in the district and was the only Class 4A team to beat New Braunfels in 2000. They advanced to the area-round of the playoffs before losing to San Marcos. “We have to work hard in pre-district matches to get comfortable with each other,” Smithson Valley head coach Margaret Mitcham said. “Our first tournament and our first match will give us a good boost of confidence if we play well and win. “We have tough matches every week. Each will prepare us for the tougher challenge we face in district.” Canyon, who finished third in the district this past season and advanced as far as the regional quarterfinals before getting bumped out by New Braunfels, looks to be the team to beat in the district with IO returning lettermen. “Our biggest difference this year is size,” Canyon head coach Heather Sanders said. “Jessy (Herrera) and Rara (Kennedy) were very small outside hitters at 5-4 and 5-6. But, those smaller kids sometimes had better ball control, so right now we’re focusing a lot on ball control.”Scoreboard »MU 0), 6:05 p.m. West Division Major League Baseball American League All Times CDT East Division W L Pct GB New York 69 49 .585 — Boston 65 51 .560 3 Toronto 55 63 .466 14 Baltimore 49 69 .415 20 Tampa Bay 42 77 .353 27 1/2 Central Division W L Pct GB Cleveland 65 52 .556 — Minnesota 64 54 .542 1 1/2 Chicago 57 59 .491 7 1/2 Detroit 48 68 .414 16 1/2 Kansas City 48 70 .407 17 1/2 West Division W L Pct GB Seattle 85 33 .720 — Oakland 68 50 .576 17 Anaheim 62 56 .525 23 Texas 52 66 .441 33 Minnesota (Milton 11-4) at Cleveland (Colon 10- W L Pct GB 8), 6:05 p.m. Arizona 66 51 .564 — Kansas City (Durbin 7-10) at Baltimore (Maduro San Francisco 66 52 .559 1/2 1-3), 6:05 p.m. Los Angeles 65 53 .551 1 1/2 Tampa Bay (Kennedy 3-7) at N.Y.
