III. Looking Back Hi 125 years ago (1876): Translators: Carl and Ethel Saur F.B. Hoffmann was the parade marshall for the New Braunfels celebration of the 100th birthday of the Republic on July 4, 1876. The celebration went on for two days and began with a cannonade and music at 5 a.m. on July 4. This was followed by a parade, singing, dancing, target shooting at the Point, speeches and fireworks. Dr. Reed Wepprecht was guest speaker. Musical participation was provided by the New Braunfels Music Band, Clear Springs Music Band, Hortontown Singing Society, Weimar Music Band and Baynard Taylor, vocalist. Others participating were Val. Pfeuffer, Bruno Voelcker, Emil Braun, Ernst Gruen Jr., Georg Knoke, F. Stuve, Rogers Shermann, Emil Galle, Joseph Faust, Somers Pfeuffer, Christoph Pfeuffer, Wm. Basel, Julius Giesecke, August Kirchner, John Magale, Haelbig, John Mueller, F. Simon, Sr., C. Rudorf, B. Hoy rn, Julius Rennert, Carl Jahn, and Hermann Seele. Druggist Forcke is said to have been seriously burned in an explosion on July 2 while mixing chemicals for the celebration fireworks. It is estimated that 4,000 people attended the two-day ROSEMARIE LEISSNER Gregory celebration. The committee is faced with a fund deficit however. IOO years ago (1901): Translator: Betty Pfeuffer Triesch County Judge R. Bodemann named Frank Nowotny Jr. and Heinrich Moeckel as trustees for School Precinct 3. The judge named H. Adams and H.E. Jentsch trustees for School Precinct IO. 75 years ago (1926): Arlene Krueger Seales The community entertainment given at the Liebscher home Sunday evening proved a great success as was attested by the attendance of more than I,000. The affair was planned as a farewell party to the U.G.I. company working on the super power plant here and was a lawn fete and community sing with a splendid program of singing, pictures, music and dancing. On June 3, a wedding was solemnized at the First Protestant Church, when Norma C. Roessing, daugh ter of the late Carl Roessing, and Gilbert Zipp, son of Mrs. Henry Zipp, were married. Their attendants were Mildred Reinarz and Dan Reeh. After the ceremony, performed by the Rev. G. Mornhinweg, the young couple left for their wedding trip to Galveston and other points of the Southwest. The groom is one of the proprietors of the New Braunfels Coffee Co. 50 years ago (1951): Rosa Linda De La Cerda Organized only this year, the New Braunfels High School chorus entered Class AA competition along with other schools which have had choruses for years, and walked away with a Gold Award for First Division. 25 years ago (1976): Myra Lee Adams Goff Despite an afternoon deluged by 1.26 inches of rain, highlights of the Fourth of July were saved from a watery death by well-timed changes in the weather. Climaxing “an otherwise miserable day,” as Parks Director Don Simon put it, was the fireworks extravaganza put on for an estimated audience of five to six thousand people. They are supposed to straighten the quilts on their beds before leaving for school. The other day, they forgot. So Dennis tore their beds apart. He dumped everything on the floor so they would have to totally remake their beds. My mother says this is cruelty. If there’s any more “dumping” to be done, consider dumping him. DEAR ABBY: I recently got back together with my ex. We only broke up for a month. We had been dating for closo to two years before the s’ lit. We’re doing great now, but I’m starting to have some problems. Whenever he wants to spend time with his friends, I freak out and start crying. I don’t know why I do this. I know he needs some time with the guys, but I always seem to flip out over it. It’s not like I think he’s doing something he’s not supposed to. I just want him around constantly, and it hurts my feelings when he takes off to be with the boys.
