The results of the election are: Julius Voelcker, mayor; H. IOO years ago (1901): Translator: Betty* Pfeuffer Triesch Bad weather could not dampen the enthusiasm for the fine performances of the orchestra and Ed Gruene’s students at the concert given at Matzdorff Hall. Among those participating were Robert and Carl Schreier, William Tays, Hermann Dietel, George Henne, Mrs. Joseph Faust and Thekla Bernhard. Also performing were Ida Druebert, Anna and Emilie Weilbacher, Susie Naeglin and Joseph Faust. 75 years ago (1926): Arlene Krueger Seales Chautauqua is again assured for this year, 104 citizens having signed to guarantee its coming. The dates have not been definitely set as yet. Our people are music lovers, and in former years the patronage ROSEMARIE LEISSNER Gregory seemed to be liberal on each and every* date. It is not every* town of this size that can have attractions of this kind, but New Braunfels goes after and gets about everything that is worthwhile. D. Stahl & Son delivered to Arlon B. Davis recently a new Ajax Six Sedan. Davis says he has driven many cars but expressed himself as better pleased with the Ajax than any other. Hermann Rehfeld also purchased an Ajax touring car from the same party. 50 years ago (1951): Rosa Linda De La Cerda New Braunfels may have a multi-million dollar tourist resort center if present plans of the chamber of commerce go through ... The center, which will probably he built in the flat area below the bridge on West Dittlinger Street, is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $2,000,000 according to our calculations ... The matter came up before the City Council yesterday afternoon when Don Mathews, manager of the chamber of commerce, asked the citv to send a telegram to Sen. Lyndon Johnson, Federal Housing Expender Tighe Woods and Rep. John Lyle ... Mathews said that both the San Marcos Air Force Base and Randolph Field Housing offices had contacted him in regard to the serious housing shortage existing in this area. Mathew's said an estimated 500 housing units w*ould be required to meet the demand ... So the chamber is asking that New Braunfels be declared a defense area so that federal restrictions on materials can be lifted and work can get started ... Mathews appeared before the city council requesting the city administration send telegrams to Johnson, Woods and Lyle patterned after ones sent by the chamber ... The telegram w*as signed by E.A. Staats, president of the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce. 25 years ago (1976): Myra Lee Adams Goff Miss Beth Anne Shelton, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Carroll Shelton, was among 18 Southern Methodist University students “called out" last w*eek for membership in Mortar Board, one of SMCTs highest honors. Students are chosen from the junior class for membership in the national honor society. Her face was red and wet from tears. After half an hour of coaxing, she confided w*hat caused her to be distraught. Libby had confronted Judith that morning with suspicions that her mother was having an affair. Not only did Judith confirm her daughter’s suspicions, she informed Libby that the affair had been going on for several years and was now’here near finished. I held Libby for the next two hours while she poured out her sorrows. Then she asked me what she should do. Tell mo, what kind of mothe proudly confirms her affair and then forces her 13-year-old daughter to keep the secret from her father? — MY HEAD IS SPINNING DEAR MY HEAD IS SPINNING: A very shortsighted, cruel and unrealistic one. Stay close to your niece. She needs someone to talk to. Tell your Dear Abby sister you know about her affair. Suggest she and her husband go to marriage counseling — or else you will have to tell him for the sake of your niece’s emotional health. Whatever the outcome, this is an unfortunate and traumatic event in your niece’s life. She will need counseling. DEAR .ABBY: This is for “No Name, No City, No Hope, No Life,” who remained in an abusive marriage “for the sake of the children." She said she’d leave when the children were grown, but now her husband has health problems and she has responsibilities. You say you have “responsibilities.” What responsibilities? Th him? Get out! Don’t look back! I love being free! Abby is right. It is never too late until you are dead. I love living alone. — FREE AT LAST IN PENNSYLVANIA DEAR FREE AT LAST: Bless you for writing. Your letter may be just the push that others need to reclaim their lives and self-respect. es 1225,1:05,2:35. 3:15.4:45. 5:20,6:55. 7:30. 9:10. 9:50 ON 2 SCREENS Saiurn,    2001 TODAY'S CROSSWORD Pl J771 F ACROSS 1 Fervor 5 Sargasso and Adriatic 9 Pedro s coin 13 ‘Cope Book" aunt 14 First name in whodunits 15 Be 17 Donkey sound 18 Go to the polls 19 News source 20 Worked the aisles 22 Biceps 24 Biblical weed 25 Bishops hats 26 Avoid a trial 29 Band instruments 31 Inch along 32 Actor Raymond 33 Caesar’s eggs 36 Birthday number 37 Gossip 40 Computer term 41 Dads companion 42 ‘Puppy Love" singer 43 Walk slowly 45 Shipping hazards 47 Like many Gap clothes 48 Natural gift 51 Clumsy boats 52 Twine (around) 54 Priest s garment 58 Hold forth 59 Tractor s garage 61 Strong metal 62 Hoarder 63 Gourmet cheese 64 Fictional captain 65 Desires 66 Back talk 67 Serving of whipped cream DOWN 1 Large-humped ox of India 2 Goofs up 3 Asian nanny 4 Baby shower gift Harsh Carve a canyon PC key Appear to be Shah s domain 10 Demands 11 Move in a furtive way 12 Basket willow 16 Throw 21 Nobelist Bunche PREVIOUS PUZZLE SOLVED Id A Y S fc L E V E A s E S A R I S U I c E F F I N L E O E R R Y E A F S N S E T A S T A S T E R © 2001 Unrtert Feature Syndicate 23 Shadow 26 Rip-oft 27 Therefore 28 Rain hard 29 Ankara natives 30 Livy's bear 32 Loud noise 33 Eyes, poetically 34 Mouse cousin 35 NYSE alternative 38 Terra firma 39 Pulls hard “A Sign To Senior Living” Large Apartment Homes for “62” Or Better—In a Full Service Independent Living Community For Seniors Residential Request Fee Waived.
