New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - May 11, 2001, New Braunfels, Texas Friday, May ll, 2001 — Herald-ZeitUNG — Page 7 AAround Town Contact Features Editor Betty Taylor at 625 9144, ext. 222. Dear Abby All in the family reap reward by gardening together for mother DEAR ABBY: Mother’s Day is approaching, and I’m feeling sentimental. I’d like to tell you what our family used to do on Mother’s Day. Mom didn’t need any more clothes or jewelry. So, for years, all the adult children, grandchildren and in-laws put on our work clothes and showed up at Mom’s home on Mother’s Day. We brought the makings for a potluck dinner and plenty of beverages. We then would proceed to till and plant my mother’s garden. Mom loved to garden and did so into her 80s, but getting it planted became too much for her. This was not only the perfect time to get the job done for her, but she loved seeing the family working together. Often what older people enjoy the most is the gift of time and family. They want their independence, but some things can be done much more easily by the children. (Just don’t forget to do it the way THEY want it done, and you’ll see the joy in their eyes.) — REMEMBERING IN WISCONSIN DEAR REMEMBERING: How sweet of you to want to share your family’s tradition. Fm sure your efforts pleased your mother mightily, and that every time she looked out her window, she was reminded of the happy memories of Mother’s Day. There are usually any number of chores to be done around a house, from painting to washing windows, fixing a fence, clearing out a garage and miscellaneous household repairs too numerous to list. For everything you need to know about wedding planning, order “How to Have a Lovely Wedding. ” Send a business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Wedding Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, IL 61054-0447. (Postage is included.) Club Notes Photo submitted Maria Villa and some of her co-workers at the New Braunfels Smoker Company present a check for $10,000 to Chris Douglas and Sherri Langston of Communities in Schools. The students involved in the Communities in Schools program will benefit from a recent donation to the program made possible by an employee of the New Braunfels Smoker Company, Maria Villa. Villa had been nominated by her peers at work to receive recognition from the W.C. Bradley Co., the parent company of New Braunfels Smoker Company. As a winner of the Spirit Award, Villa then was given the opportunity to choose one or more local organizations to receive a charitable donation from the W.C. Bradley Co. After consulting with her co-workers, Villa decided on Hospice and Communities in Schools to recommend for the donations. Each organization will receive $10,000. Villa had known about Communities in Schools through her son’s involvement in the program during a period of years. Her daughter also attends a CIS-sponsored after-school program. Villa said there was no way she could personally give such a sizeable financial donation to an organization and was thankful that W.C. Bradley Co. had given her the chance to do so. As part of a nationwide celebration honoring the accomplishments of Community Action Agencies, Mayor Stoney Williams and County Judge Danny Scheel proclaimed May as Community Action Month in Comal County. Community Action Agencies across the country are celebrating their 37th anniversary this year. Community Action Agencies were created in 1964, under the Economic Opportunity Act, signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Since that time, the national network of nearly 1,000 local CAA’s had been providing a bridge to self-sufficiency for millions of Americans and their families. Community Action helps people help themselves. For information on programs and services provided by K. JESSIE SLATEN/Herald-Zeitung New Braunfels Noon Lions Club president Lester Stockhorst presents club scholarships of $500 each to NBHS seniors Jennifer Walden, Nancy Saad, Christopher Strickland and Cody Reimer (from left).
