Fame member Richard Marler from Port Arthur has died in a Houston hospital He was 57 A Floydada native and Texas Tech graduate Marler had been in a coma the past three months since being hospitalized for an Aug 20 heart attack He died Wednesday The executive director and founder of the sixyearold Southeast Texas High School Coaches Association Marler received statewide recognition for pushing legislation to reduce the original nopass noplay penalty in to three weeks from its original sixweek disqualification of students from any extracurricular activities Marler led Port Arthur Austin and Jefferson high schools to 11 playoff berths in 26 head coaching seasons leading two teams to the 3A state semifinals and compiling a 589 winning percentage He had been head football coach at Jefferson upanddown season in which he bounced in and out of the starting lineup and had more interceptions than touch down passes coming into the game Simms got the start because Major Applewhite was hobbled
