Inc Around Town Looking Back 125 years ago (1875) Translators: Carl and Ethel Saur J.T. Lawhon was shot and killed by an unknown person on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1875 at a dance at Spring Branch. A special meeting was called by residents of Curry Creek to come to some kind of conclusion as to the murder of this young man. Hermann Seele, Secretary of the Board and Julius Voelcker, W. Clemens and J.P. Lehde of the Instruction Committee sent a notice to parents who have more than three children and might not be able to pay tuition for the fourth or more children. These parents were instructed to contact the school board and other arrangements would be made. There was a reminder to all that tuition had to be paid quarterly and in advance. IOO years ago (1900) Translator: Betty Pfeuffer THesch A.S. Werihheim, a former teacher in Comal and Guadalupe Counties, has taken over the “Comfort Times.” In the north comer of Guadalupe County where Cottonwood Creek begins its southwesterly course to Yorks Creek, lies the community of Redwood. It is six miles from San Marcos and four miles from the San Marcos River. The Gruene family opened a store in the area similar to their store in Thom Hill. They also opened a blacksmith shop. 75 years ago (1925): Arlene Krueger Seales THANKSGIVING PROGRAM ... Oi Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the hour of two o’clock, the New Braunfels Public Schools gave the annual Thanksgiving Program. The children of all the schools were assembled at the Carl Schultz School for the occasion. The program was under the auspices of the teachers and the students working below the departmental grades. The New Braunfels High School Orchestra under the direction of Mr. Emil Eggeling furnished the music for the program. The children of the Mirabeu B. Lamar School gave a program in the forenoon and joined with the children for the afternoon program. A cordial invitation was extended to one and all to be present for the Thanksgiving Exercises. The Home Economics Cottage was formerly opened on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 3 to 5 o’clock, benefit of Texas Clothing Contest. A cordial invitation is extended to one and all by Miss Bouland and the students of the home economics classes. 50 years ago (1950): Rosa Linda De La Cerda ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL PARISH HALL DEDICATED ... The Right Reverend Everett H. Jones, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, dedicated the new Parish Hall of St. John’s Episcopal Church Sunday, Nov. 12, and confirmed a class of confirmation candidates presented by the Rev. D. Williams McClurken, priest-in-charge. The service was held at 8 a.m. in the new building, which is located at the comer of Guenther and Lee Streets. Following the special service, there was a breakfast for members of the congregation at the Mission Valley Guest Ranch... Mom irked by sister-in-law with no desire to play aunt DEAR ABBY: I have a problem with my sister-in-law. We’ve never been close, but got along fine until the birth of my son two years ago. She always said she didn’t like or want children, but I never took her seriously. I thought she’d make an exception with her own nephew. She’s not nasty, but she takes absolutely no interest in him. She never wants to hold or play with him, and she’s made it clear she’s not available for baby sitting. At times, I think she resents the attention he gets from other members of the family. My mother-in-law understands how I feel, but tells me it’s my sister-in-law’s choice and that I shouldn’t let it get to me. What do you think? — OFFENDED IN EAST BENTLEIGH, AUSTRALIA DEAR OFFENDED: I agree with your husband and mother-in-law. Not everyone is able to relate to small children. You’ll gain nothing by continuing to personalize this. It has nothing to do with you or the child. DEAR ABBY: I recently received a wedding invitation from a family member. It was addressed to me only — not my husband. The inside envelope also included only my name. Some of my friends say it was probably an oversight and told me I should add my husband’s name on the return card. I feel this is improper. Another friend says there is no excuse, and I shouldn’t go or send a gift. My husband is hurt, and I’m not sure what to do. — SHIRLEY IN PENNSYLVANIA DEAR SHIRLEY: To exclude your husband's name from the invitation was extremely rude. It meant that only you were invited to the wedding. Under no circumstances should you add his name to the response card. Simply pencil in that you will NOT be in attendance.
