Exttmton Guadalupe River a whitewater rapid SAN ANTONIO AP Forget the beer The only foam on the Guadalupe River these days is in the water Flood releases from the Canyon Dam have turned the normally leisurely Guadalupe into white water rapids Youre not going to see any tubers Blake Rothstein of San Antonio who headed to the river This is definitely premium kayaking River officials Friday began draining rain swelled Canyon Lake at rates as fast as cubic feet of water per second turning the tranquil tube ride between the dam and New Braunfels into Class 2 and Class 3 rapids that can chew up inner tubes and challenge even experienced kayakers The trip from the first crossing to Gruene which took a tranquil four hours in the sum mer can now be covered in 45 minutes Officials plan to increase the flow to close to cubic feet per second early next week If you dont know what you are doing or you dont have the right equipment to handle this volume of water its not smart to try river guide Red McFarland said Its a little chilly and the water temperature is low It does not take long to get In hopes to keep people with more bravery than brains off the nowroiling river outfitters are renting rafts only to those who pay for a guide to bring them down the river and are no longer renting tubes Typically outfitters stop renting tubes when the water flow exceeds 900 cubic feet per sec ond During the summer of 1997 the river flowed at cfs for more than a month and a few inexperienced thrill seekers in a raft made of inner tubes and plywood tried to run the river themselves Their shanty raft smashed on a tree strand ing the rafters in trees above one of the tough est rapids on the river McFarland said When the river is like this in the summer its real hard on the business But
