IRVING When he retires Troy Aikman will be remembered as being the smart accurate strongarmed quarter back who led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories in four years For now hes just another average quar terback Or worse Aikmans fouryear slide bottomed out Sunday with five interceptions in a 1914 loss to the New York Giants It was his most in 12 NFL seasons and tied the most in Dallas 41year history The most revealing part was how it hap pened All five pick offs and two more that were dropped by Giants could be blamed on a lack of arm strength poor reads or both all signs that hes fading Aikman who threw just five interceptions over 11 games in 1998 said Monday that he realizes hes not the player he once was AIKMAN I try to go out and play within the framework of what I feel I can still said Aikman who turns 34 next month I dont feel like some things are quite as effortless as what they once were For someone who has been accustomed to playing at a very high level thats really Aikman has never been one to smile during games even when things are going his way Lately the look on his face has been one of strain Thats probably pretty he said Its been a struggle Thats not news to anybody who is involved Theres a lot of reasons for The Cowboys are 13 this season in games Aikman has started Hes thrown only two touchdowns and nine intercep tions more than he had in either of his last two Super Bowl seasons Since 1996 the last time Dallas won a playoff game Aikman is 2124 in the reg ular season and 02 in the postseason He hasnt been to the Pro Bowl any of those years after going to six straight Nonetheless Cowboys owner Jerry See Tennessees primetimers continue to whip Jags George runs for 165 yards in Titans 2713 win on MNF BY DAVE GOLDBERG AP Football Writer NASHVILLE Term The first primetime game in Tennessee was a showcase for the Titans primetime players Eddie George Steve McNair and Frank Wycheck The Titans beat their favorite whipping boys the Jacksonville Jaguars 2713 Monday night as George ran for 165 yards on 30 carriees McNair threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns and Wycheck started things off by catching a TD pass flat oft his back The defense chipped in with five sacks in a game in which a lot of streaks continued It was the fifth straight win after an opening game loss in Buffalo for Tennessee putting the Titans in first place by themselves in the AFC Central onehalf game ahead of Baltimore It was the fourth straight loss for Jacksonville the longest streak since its first season in 1995 The Jaguars 25 lost yet another key player wide receiver Jimmy Smith who bruised his right knee in the first quarter It also was the fifth straight win by Tennessee over Jacksonville last year when the Jaguars went 153 the only three losses were adminis tered by the Titans including a 3314 beating in the AFC title game And George who didnt crack 100 yards in his first three games had his third straight in triple figures and second over 150 The game went just about the way the season has for the Jaguars They had two chances in the first at the beginning and the end They blew them both and went off trailing 173 The first came four minutes into the when Fred Taylor broke loose on a 71yard run that gave Jacksonville a first down at the Tennessee 7 But the Jags had to settle for a 23 yard field goal by Mike Hollis and a 30 lead GEORGE Cougarettes host Unicorns tonight K JESSIE New Braunfels senior Jackie Baerwald 15 hits the ball during a match earlier this season at New Braunfels High School gym The Unicorns Hampton did what he was brought to New York to do pitch the Mets into the World Series and a possible subway one at that Hampton pitched a threehitter and the Mets started their clinch ing party early
