New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 14, 2000, New Braunfels, Texas Page 8A HERALDZEITUNG Saturday October RELIGION Parents should act as leaders not victims TIM JUDKINS One of the political hot pota toes this election year is the deca dent nature of the entertainment industry Candidates are decrying the evils of Hollywood and demanding they clean up their act These shallow politicians claim that our children are being targeted and ultimately exposed to the filth that movies display and that the future of a healthy society depends on what Hollywood produces Thank God there is hope for our helpless children who find themselves entrenched in front of the electronic babysitter for end less hours mindlessly rolling from one channel to another After all passive entertainment has become a childs inherent right Parents abdication of supervision and influence can be excused now that the new supervising force for children is being held responsible for the power it wields Kids that demand to be dropped off at the cinema to relieve them of the awful boredom of an evening at home with other fami ly members can know that the entertainment god will be held at bay and not unduly influence their delicate souls with smut Since mom and dad have yielded their Godgiven influence over to mindless linear input the enter tainment industry can bear the parental burden of putting whole some values into our beloved tnunchkins Then there is the computer Since parents have relinquished their power to forces stronger than they deem controllable and since it is the kids who now set the rules something must be done about the Internet Demanding that godless people in a godless industry behave in a Godhonoring way appears to be our only strategy Christian parents have appar ently forgotten that greater is he that is in us than he that is in the or that they are biblically empowered to guide and disci pline their children toward godly values and healthy choices It appears that we are satisfied to address symptoms and not caus es Golf clubs are the problem not the golfer Hollywood will change when godly people live with godly character Christian parents need to act like people in charge rather than victims of a godless society Movies television and the com puter are not rights of every human child Godlessness will continue to grow and abound as long as there are people willing to spend money and yield their influence to entertainments per ceived power The only hope of altering the situation is to shift the power base back to where it belongs Parents need to take the reins of their parental influence back and inten tionally set boundaries that allow children to both observe and adopt godly values The television does not have to be watched movies do not have to be seen and the Internet does not have to be surfed Hollywoods influence is not the problem Our character is The only answer to overcoming the inevitable influence of evil is to fight it on a spiritual front People who love God with all their heart soul strength and mind position themselves to honor God instead of indulging their Christlike charac ter makes healthy choices even when no one is looking Tim Judkins leads the Contemporary Service each Sunday at First Protestant Young Life hosts Manhattanstyle fundraiser with coffee desserts
