Wasser Strasse proposal BY Jo LEE FERGUSON Staff Writer A river walk along the Comal River and a waterbased trans portation system for tubers hold answers to many of the citys river problems according to Jeff Henry Henry is founder and CEO of NBGS International a sister company to Schlitterbahn Water park Resorts Henry also is one of Schlitterbahns owners NBGS located in New Braunfels designs and manufactures slides and equip ment for waterparks worldwide Henry presented the city council Monday with a plan that would change the face of the Comal Riv er and create a system in which Comal River tubers wouldnt have to be shuttled from the rivers exit to their cars Traffic trash bad behavior on the river money to police the rivers handicapped accessibility to the rivers Those issues and others would all be addressed through the pro posal Henry It has been my lifelong dream my hope to do something for New Henry said Henrys proposal was listed on the agenda as only a presentation not as a discussion and action item That meant the council could not make a decision on the proposal Monday Instead the council indicated it would decide at its next meeting whether to authorize NBGS to develop a business plan to imple ment the proposal Under the proposal an approxi mate twomile landscaped river walk or Wasser Strasse would be built from Landa Street to Garden Street Jeff Henry speaks to the city council Monday evening on his Wasser System K JESSIE Strasse and Transportation The Wasser Strasse would pro vide a place for arts exhibits wed dings and other events Restau rants and shops also could locate on the Wasser Strasse The Wasser Strasse also could provide interpretive areas to edu cate the public about the Edwards Aquifer endangered species sup ported by the Comal Springs and other issues Henry said Its something we need to edu cate everyone in this region Henry said If implemented Henry said the proposal would provide 100 per cent free access to the Comal Riv er for residents and visitors That includes land Schlitterbahn owns along the Comal Rover New Braunfels is blessed by its rivers he said We need to get them opened See K JESSIE A small group of tubers Between Landa Street and Garden Street including about two miles of landscaped walkways from Wursthalle in Landa Park along both channels of the Comal River past the citys tube chute in Prince Solms Park past the newest section of the Schlitterbahn and ending at the river exit on Garden Street OTHER COMPONENTS Transportainment a water transportation system developed by NBGS International would carry tubers from the Garden Street river exit across Schlitterbahn property and back up river tubers could exit where the old and new Comal channels meet or float down the river again Transportainment also would link Schlitterbahns two waterparks through Prince Solms Park Transportainment could be used in times of low spring flow to capture and recirculate water into the river and ensure more consistent water levels Wasser Strasse could include restaurants shops entertainment venues and interpretive areas covering local ecology and heritage Wasser Strasse would meet the RON MALONEY Staff Writer The wife of a man strangled in New Braunfels more than a year ago faced her husbands killer in court Monday and said she for gave him Douglas E Journeay 36 of Melvan pleaded guilty Monday to strangling to death 62year old Ted McReynolds in June 1999 In exchange for his plea he accepted a 45year prison sen tence The plea allowed him to escape possible lethal injection had he been convicted of capital murder McReynolds was found dead in his New Braunfels apartment in June 1999 Police believe he died early on the morning of June 6 1999 but his body wasnt discov ered until family members went to his home in Mill Bridge Apart ments at midday June 9 Journeay will be eligible for parole after he serves years of his sentence Comal County Assistant District Attorney Ed Jen drzey said Hell be there a good long Jendrzey said Journeay also will be forced to pay in restitution to the McReynolds family at the discre tion of the Texas Parole Board Joumeay was indicted on Sept 8 1999 in connection with McReynolds murder while he was being held in Comal County Jail New Braunfels police and Texas Rangers arrested Joumeay on June 15 1999 in San Antonio in con nection with the indecency charge When they arrested him police found a reportedly stolen vehicle owned by Ted McReynolds near by By Monday Journeay had spent 454 days in jail awaiting trial After the guilty plea Journeay in leg irons turned and faced the fam ily of the man he murdered and stood silently as the wife son daughter and soninlaw of the vic tim addressed him I dont think you have any grasp of the with this because God has said I must for give you I dont hold any unfor giveness anymore My prayer for you is you will find your own forgiveness for your sins in Jesus McReynolds daughter Pamela Daviscourt choked back tears when she spoke to Journeay I am the daughter of the man you killed I miss my daddy she said We had a wonderful spe cial relationship I cannot stop thinking about the suffering he went through in his death the suffering caused by Soninlaw Eric Daviscourt told Journeay he too had a special relationship with the victim He missed his fatherinlaw who became by best friend before he was a fatherinlaw to Its absolutely terrible to have to explain to a year old child what death is all Davis court said But what saddens me more is you have two wonderful parents weve
