The 41-year-old Delta Air Lines pilot died in the crash before his family and friends. ^Sensitive duds DALLAS (AP) — A North Texas company is working on technology to put medical sensors in a smart shirt.” The device could allow the wearer’s vital signs to be continuously transmitted to a doctor. Addison-based Sensatex/Lifelink says the shirt could be used to monitor a patient’s heart or respiration rate and send the information to a doctor over cellular or satellite networks. ■ Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology developed the shirt in a project funded by the military. > The government has been looking for a way to monitor the physical condition of soldiers during battle. The United Way of Comal County has an all-volunteer board of directors led by president Jonathan Hull, a local attorney. The drive chair is Sharon McCoy, a longtime resident of New Braunfels. WORD General Manager George Cushanick said low use on the Guadalupe this summer led to the decision. “We’re not even expecting that big of a weekend on Labor Day,” Cushanick said. “Due to the low utilization of the river, we thought it was necessary to do this. Its fiscally responsible for us to cut back these costs.” A pair of contractors, outfitter Paul Rich of Mountain Breeze and Stryker Saunders, clean sections of the river. Cushanick said WORD’S health and sanitation committee decided the cleanup with the low use was not cost-effective. The annual Friends of the River cleanup will still take place on Sept. 16, Cushanick said.
