feelings of love and undying gratitude will reach the young woman who is the birth mother of my new granddaughter. My daughter and her husband after years of indescribable pain and disappointment, just went to the hospital to pick up their brand-new baby girl. Their joy and happy tears would warm the coldest of hearts. I want the birth mother to know that her love, courage and feelings of loss have not been forgotten in our moments of joy. Your baby will know from the beginning that you had choices and you chose to give her life. You performed the most unselfish act I can imagine, and I question if I would have had your strength of character. Saying thank you seems inadequate. I wish I could put my arms around you and say “I love you,” and I hope my new granddaughter inherits your heart and courage. May the rest of your life be blessed as you have blessed ours. HAPPY NEW GRANDMOTHER, DALLAS DEAR HAPPY GRANDMOTHER: I’m sure your letter will warm the hearts of tens of thousands of young mothers who have placed their precious infants for adoption. I'm certain very few of them wanted to give her child away, and the sacrifice was made to ensure the baby had a better future than she could provide. DEAR ABBY: Three weeks before our wedding day. my fiance canceled our engagement with only a feeble explanation. We had gone together for five years. What should I do with the bridesmaid dresses (that he paid for), the engraved invitations and my beautiful fitted wedding gown? Would it be tacky to keep it for the future? — DISAPPOINTED IN PENNSYLVANIA DEAR DISAPPOINTED: Sometimes good fortune comes disguised as disaster. Under the circumstances, ask the bridesmaids if they would like to keep the dresses. If they decline, give or sell them to a consignment shop — and, yes, give the money to your ex-fiance.Throw away the invitations, but because you love it, keep your beautiful wedding gown. Have a quality dry cleaner carefully preserve it for a happier wedding day in the future. DEAR ABBY: I have not seen my problem in your column, so I thought I would write and get your opinion. “Tony” and I are not married, but we have lived together for more than 15 years. I have always been included in his family's celebrations and have helped them in times of crisis. Tony’s sister died a few months ago. Of course, I attended the funeral. What stuck in my craw was that her relatives from parents to nieces and nephew s were listed as survivors in the obituary, but my name was not included. I ani hurt by the omission. Considering the length of my relationship w itll Tony, shouldn't I have been named in the obituary? LEFT OUT IN MINNEAPOLIS DEAR LEFT OUT: Regardless of how close a relationship one may have with a relative of the deceased, traditional!) only family members are named in the obituary. Technically, you are a friend of the family, not a relative. Sorry. Looking Back 125 years ago (1875) Translators: Carl and Ethel Saur At the Comal County Republican meeting G.F. Groos was elected chairman and Fr. Rurmann, secretary. Delegates elected to the San Antonio District Republican Convention were H. Seele, G.F. Groos and A. Eiband. IOO years ago (1900) Translator: Betty Pfeuffer Triesch The Guadalupe River rose to 65 feet at Kerrville, destroying a railroad crossing. Farms were under water at Waring. The Medina rose to 50 feet in 2 hours at Castroville. The Tobin and Bell families were camping on the river. All were saved except 10-year-old Sammy Bell who drowned. Harry Landa will build a railroad to connect Landa s Park and his industries to the Sunset line near Marion. Building will begin soon. 75 years ago (1925): Arlene Krueger Seales The summer school of Rev. G. Mornhinweg, assisted by his wife, and Miss Gertrude Streuer and Miss Wallie Braune, closed Thursday with a picnic at the Edw in Simon s place on the Comal. There were 94 names on the roll who during all the period of 6 weeks attended quite regularly and certainly have been much benefited. The school was a success. The San Antonio Public Service Company is considering a change in location of the Comal Power Company at New Braunfels to a point on the Guadalupe River near the Planters and Merchants Cotton Mill or to a site in Landa Park. The proposed change is to avoid floods which formerly have swept the present location of the plant. 50 years ago (1950): Rosa Linda De La Cerda Nine New Braunfels boys who have reached the age of 18 have registered under the Selective Service Act of 1948, according to a release from the Guadalupe and Comal Counties Selective Service Board in Seguin. The boys are Vernon M. Zipp, Hilario Cardenas, Marshal Davis, Harvey L. Soell, Rodolfo Castro, Nelson E. Triesch. Leonard G. Binz, Kenneth J. Warnecke and Harvey Pantermuehl. Earlier this week, a class from the Southwest Texas State Teachers College Industrial Arts Department visited one of New Braunfels newest industries. The students came down to watch George W. House spin copper at his shop called Steincraft on 410 North Seguin. Douglas Harris, instructor of the class and Dr. Victor Bowers, head of the department wanted the students to see just how a stein was made from a disc of copper. The process is simple, said House, once you get on to it, but it is a fast disappearing art. All you do is to place a disc onto a copper spinning machine, and force the metal around a mold. House made his own mold on which he can fashion his stein and trim it all in one operation. After they are sanded and polished they are placed on a wheel which is hooked to a fan for glazing. The lacquer smells rather strong, so the fan is used to suck the fumes out the w indow. The Houses just started their business about two years ago. Their daughter, Mary Ann, is now married to Stan Hollmig, a former A&M basketball and football star, who is now playing professional baseball. 25 years ago (1975) Myra Lee Adams Goff Visiting their hometown after a tw o-year tour of duty on the island of Guam are Maj. and Mrs. Harvey Haas. They were both actively involved in received Vietnamese evacuees at the conclusion of American involvement in South Vietnam. When papers were f inally in ROSEMARIE LEISSNER Gregory order and evacuees were ready to depart Guam for the United States or other destinations, Haas told how people would write messages on paper plates about where they were being sent and tack them around the camp on bulletin boards and other posting places in hopes that relatives and friends from whom they had become separated would see them. Also, the wealth the Vietnamese had was converted to gold which they wore strapped to their bodies until a bank was set up on Guam to buy the gold for traveler’s checks. At one point, the major estimated that they were handling more than a million dollars per day. Haas stated that the most outstanding thing about the entire experience of the evacuation program and receiving the people on Guam was the spirit of cooperation with which the military personnel, their wives and families and other civilians worked to get the job done. The Haas children did their part by babysitting for families on the base who were keeping irregular hours due to the evacuation campaign. Asked how he personally felt about the evacuation of Vietnamese from their homeland to the United States, Haas said he felt it was a good thing. He continued “Many of the professional people of South Vietnam w ith training will contribute in the U.S. Others will have a definate need to obtain some training or a skill. I feel it is our responsibility to help those Vietnamese who helped us while we were occupying their country. Anyone who worked w ith us stood the chance of not surviving and were often chastised by others of the population”. It is unlikely, however, that anyone in the Haas family will soon forget the experiences with the Vietnamese evacuees, or the lesson in brotherhood among all men that they learned there.
