New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 30, 2000, New Braunfels, Texas Page 2B HERALDZEITUNG Sunday July 30 2000 For every action theres a reaction K JESSIE Seventh and eighth grade football players run through reaction drills during football camp at New Braunfels High School this past week 1B cornerbacks drafted by the Cowboys in April should get plenty of playing time along with thirdyear player Duane Hawthorne and secondyear play er Stephen Fisher All are trying to ensure playing time behind starters McNeil and Kevin Smith Campo the Dallas defensive coordinator the past five seasons before replacing fired Chan Gailey as head coach concedes that Sanders departure may affect the entire defense on some pass coverages Still hes not overly concerned about life after the cor nerback who is now at rival Washington I dont want to make it sound like were in trouble because I dont feel we are I think well find a way to get things accomplished and be an effective defensive foot ball he said Pittsburgh meanwhile may have trouble just trying to find enough good players to start Coach Bill Cowher will be forced to do some shuffling with seven players likely out because of injuries running back Richard Huntley center Dermontti Dawson defensive end Kevin Henry wide receiver Will Blackwell defensive end Gabe Northern and offensive linemen Roger Duffy and Tom Myslinski Huntley expected to compete with Jerome Bettis for playing time after signing a million threeyear contract injured his left hamstring during practice Thursday afternoon and is out indefinitely He averaged yards per carry last season Pittsburghs thirdstring quarter back is expected to get most of the snaps a decision that has nothing to do with injuries The Steelers want to get a good look at Anthony Wright who was not drafted as a rookie in 1999 but is considered their possible quarter back of the future Wright who hasnt played in a game since the preseason last year is scheduled to play the entire sec ond half against Dallas Kordell Stewart will play the first quarter as will the other starters before former Giants quarterback Kent Graham takes over in the second quarter After Aikman starts at quarter back for Dallas freeagent signee Randall Cunningham will see some action before Paul Justin and nondrafted rookie Clint Stoerner get most of the snaps in the battle for third team LETTERS TO THE SPORTS EDITOR Just to set the record straight A feu facts to set the record straight from the administration of New Braunfels Little League regarding the seven select players who opted out of the Little League tournament process and chose instead to play in a select tournament in Colorado It was stated in the counter point article in last Sundays edi tion 7 23 of the HeraldZeitung that at no time during the process of selecting the Junior League all Stars was there an inquiry about whether or not these players were committed to play allstars The commitment doesnt come during the process of selecting the all star team It comes after the play ers have been selected and the player agent calls each of the par asking for a commitment for Little League tournament sea Son If a parent declines to com mit because of a conflict with the dates the player is then replaced with the player with the next highest number of votes If the parents of the select seven had done the proper thing and told the player agent that they could not commit to the entire tournament process because of their commitment to play in Colorado then a chain reaction of good things would have happened to other kids in the league The seven players on the Blue team with the highest vote totals would have been promoted to the Red team After looking at the picture of the select team in the same edition I noticed three additional Colorado bound select players who played on the Blue team This means 10 additional players who didnt get to play in the all stars at all would have been given the opportunity to compete Finally while the red team may or may not have advanced to sec tionals without the select seven the five remaining players would have been guaranteed the chance of playing as long as their team continued winning Select ball is not governed by the New Braunfels Little League It was started here in New Braunfels in 1995 with the same group of kids that won the only State Little League title in the history of the community The two have coexisted happily with many of the select players playing in the league during the week and playing select ball on the week ends or before and after the sea son Parents of many of the select have contributed greatly to the construction of the new complex on the loop While there is noth ing in writing theres always been the understanding that Little League was first priority for those who wanted to participate jn both In Little League circles New Braunfels came away with a black eye and Texas District 31 ended up not being represented by a team in the sectional tourna ment In speaking with Mike Texas State Little League Director this has never happened before Never has a team qualified to advance to the sectional level and then bowed out because of a conflict with a select tournament New Braunfels Little League will do what it can before next year to put in safe guards to prevent this from hap pening again Jon Ellis President NB LL Whos to say where they have to play I am writing in response to the recent articles regarding the New Braunfels Junior Little League AllStar team specifically the seven members of this team that have chosen to compete at the National Triple Crown Tournament in Colorado and forego their chance at competing for the state championship in the Junior Little League State Tournament in Brenham Tx I know the majority of these boys and have had the pleasure of seeing them compete on their select baseball team the New Braunfels Warriors as well as their Junior Little League AllStar team These boys as well as the five other members of the Ail Star team are hard working tal ented and dedicated young men who have chosen athletics in this case baseball to devote a majority of their time and effort into Their parents have devoted hundreds of hours not to men tion dollars in supporting and helping their sons to realize their goals There are no losers in this group only a set of young men who were unfortunate enough to get caught in a situation where a very difficult decision had to be made that would undoubtedly upset someone Kenny Leonard whom I believe to be an assistant coach on the Junior Little League Ail Star team said in his letter this past Sunday that these boys and their parents think noth ing of walking away from the five remaining team members This is not so The players wanted des perately to compete for the state championship but logistically it was not feasible Mr Leonard also states that the remaining five players were left behind after having sacrificed their summertime also The Junior Little League team was as Mr Leonard states on the brink of something What about earning your way to a national tournament where you will have the ability to compete against some of the finest players in the country in you age group Coach Leonard also refers to the five boys being abandoned by their teammates and not being able to complete their goal What about the remaining team mem bers on the Warriors Should they be abandoned and denied the trip they earned to play in Colorado The thing I find more troubling is that Mr Leonard spent weeks training coaching and bonding with these boys but the minute they decide what their plans are he turns on them There are many important lessons that our youth can learn from participating in sports Sometimes I believe the most important lifelong lessons have nothing to do with physical abili ty or winning but from relation ships forged from learning to deal with adversity in a positive way I would like to tip my hat to manager Greg Michalec for the outstanding job he did with the Junior Little League AllStar team He and his team represent ed New Braunfels well with their skills sportsmanship and team work Anyone who saw them play recognized how good they really were I would also like to congratulate the New Braunfels Warriors on their outstanding sea son and to wish them the very best of luck in Colorado Kevin Bammert New Braunfels A Sign To Senior Living A Full Service Independent Living Community Choices 1 BA 2 BA and 2 BA
