New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - June 15, 2000, New Braunfels, Texas Thursday June HBRALDZfiiTUNG Page 7A Off to a far land NBHS alum heads to China to teach English BYHlATHlRTOOO Staff Writer New Braunfels High School graduate Jennifer Ashford said she knew she wanted to do something different during her sophomore year at Brigham Young University In the spring of her freshman year she heard about an opportu nity to live in a foreign country for a semester and teach English to young children r She jumped at the chance In August Ashford will join about 45 other students who will travel to Wu Han China where they will live in a Chinese board ing school and teach Chinese stu dents to speak English Ashford said she didnt know how to speak Chinese and except for a trip to Africa when she was 8 months old she had never been out of the country Im not scared at Ashford said I dont know what to expect so I guess I have no reason to be scared Im pretty excited to go over Ashford will live in China for a semester as part of the International Language Program a nonprofit organization that sends students to foreign countries to teach English Students were allowed to choose between China and Russia With about two months until departure the only hurdle Ashford faces is raising enough money to pay for the trip The cost of the trip including airfare room and board and meals is The program strongly suggests that we get sponsors to help pay for the she said Ashford said her family already paid the up front to ensure her place in the program but they would like to find sponsors to help reimburse them for the expenses Ashford now has a parttime job at Natural Bridge Caverns this summer to raise for travel money she will need during a one week break in the semester And she is looking for another part time job to offset those expenses Ashford said any contributions from sponsors would be used only for airfare meals or boarding Anybody can sponsor All they have to do is fill out an applica she said Ashford also is responsible for bringing her own teaching sup plies Im hoping a store will donate those school she said One incentive is that any dona tion would be taxdeductible Another reason is that its not necessarily a donation to me but a donation to these children we will be helping to ensure they will have a better she said Any local businesses or individ uals wanting to become sponsors Annexation hearings set BY HEATHER TODD Staff Writer New Braunfels City Council set July 12 and July 19 as dates for public hearings regarding annexation of square miles around the citys current bound ary limits Areas considered for annexa tion this year include T Bar Valley Road Hunters Creek Northwoods Common Drive Kowald 110 Alves Road Stonegate Southbank Klein Road and FarmtoMarket 1044 and Schmucks Road During public hearings local homeowners can voice concerns about the annexation City planner Harry Bennett said the proposed date of initia tion of annexation or the date of the first reading of the prdinance was Aug 14 Council will then have 90 days to complete all can mail a contribution to the International Language Program 60 E 100 S Provo Utah 84606 Anyone with questions about the program can call Ashford at 9052584 Ashford said her name needed to be speci fied on the contribution Besides the chance to visit a for eign country and learn about a dif ferent culture Ashford said a big advantage to the program was the chance to work with children Ashford who will teach kinder garten students said she was inter ested in teaching but had not yet chosen a major The international language pro gram will give her practical expe rience teaching children and learn ing to be independent she said Because the children spend weekdays at the boarding school Ashford said American student teachers would act as surrogate parents for the children Were going to be role models and forming a loving relationship with the she said The American studentteachers will not be allowed to speak Chinese with the children Ashford said the teaching process was supposed to mirror natural speech development Teachers help the children learn English by speaking to them only in English while participating in different activities This is hard for me Im giving up four months from school and Im not getting she said Ill be in a different country without my family to be there for me I dont how hard it will be for Photo submitted New Braunfels High School graduate Jennifer Ashford will live in a Chinese boarding school next semester and teach Chinese students to speak English Jewdry at most Juit a ample of fie saving you will find Interim rnorkdowu may hovt taken Entire stack only where indicated Selections mqy vary by BEALLS City staff said the resolution council approved Monday njaju only set the public hearingi wit did not mean all of toe proposed REMEMBER DAD ON FATHERS PAY SUNDAY JUNE i ;
