NBISD photo The New Braunfels Chapter of the Texas Retired Teachers Association collected more than 300 books during the statewide Children’s Book Drive. The books were presented to the New Braunfels ISD’s HOSTS program. The purpose of the drive was to place a book in the hands of a child who otherwise might not have a book to read during the summer. The local drive committee was: Anita Stipnieks (chair), Nancy Bingham, Ann Daenert, Annette Fuqua, Holly Guenther, Virginia Hansard, Barbara Miller, Susan Ott, Connie Strate and Sue Whittenborn. NBISD photo Senior Nicole Cornevin recently received first place in the high school division in the 18th annual poetry contest, sponsored by the New Braunfels Arts Council. She won for her poem “Crystalline Delerium.” She will graduate from the New Braunfels ISD School of Choice Friday at New Braunfels High School. NBISD photo After reading the book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown, a fifth grade class at Carl Schurz Elementary began their own adventure. The story is about a young boy who is flattened by a bulletin board and then experiencees all sorts of adventures due to his flattened condition. The book inspired fifth graders to create their own “Stanleys” to visit area schools and national parks in each region of the United States. They visited another school in New York and accompanied students on a field trip to Natural Bridge Caverns. Most recently, Stanely attended the prom and the high school.
