MOGUIN Sports Editor Coming together seems to be the key in the Smithson Valley girls quest in the soccer playoffs Thats exactly what they did during the district season Now they hope to take their game as far as it will allow them They will meet Kerrville in the first round of the playoffs at Friday in Boerne Its nice to make it since it is my last said Chessen Schwethelm a senior for SVHS I think because were coming togeth er as a team we should do Smithson Valley coach Erin Miller said These girls have really turned it around Our preseason really set the stage Most teams would throw in the towel But these girls are athletes and they dont give up The Lady Rangers began the 2000 campaign with a 261 record in non district play before turning the corner to finish the season at 73 in District 274A They ended up in second place overall with a 991 record When district started we went off Schwethelm said The team got into it mentally Everybody picked up and we did But the Lady Rangers lost their last two games of the regular season and are looking to get back to their win ning ways They were shut out by Hays 50 and were defeated by San Marcos 31 this past week think the reason we lost the last two is because we were not mentally Schwethelm said Senior forward Tommi Parsons said Because of losing its going to help us in the playoffs because were going to want it more It will take dedication and heart just the want for We have strong offensive Schwethelm said We have long balls and crossing abilities We also have two midfielders who can throw it We have a strong defense and are too hard Parsons said File photo The girls soccer team from Smithson Valley High School heads into the first round of playoffs Friday in Boerne Qjue defensive strength on the Lady Lady Rangers prepare for their first postseason game they are getting positive reviews for their preparation from their coach Weve had two good Miller said Our term has been hus Hustle on and field Qijr last game was a disappointing loss and the kids are working on changing that Right now were working on basic skills utilizing the space opening up and working as a Some players currently are dealing with nagging injuries Miller said She said the key to being successful in the playoffs is for the players to stay healthy not give up play hard and focus on the next game Theyre attitudes are good right now and thats what we she said Stars goalie returns after arrest EAST RUTHERFORD AP A week after being arrested in the assault of a hotel security guard an apologetic Ed Belfour rejoined
