I haven’t been too lucky the last three weeks; I was beginning to worry. But I had a couple of ladies come through for me this week. The cats and the pirates (AA-00-20) were identified. They are Joel Karl Erben, Stanley Jett as the cats and Denise Eberhard Mund and Steve Eberhard as the pirates. Thank you Arline Eberhard and Joline Erben for giving me a call. If anyone happens to know who “Carmen Miranda” is, let me know. Our young lady of “yesteryear’ was not identified. I was sure hoping I would get a call on this one since it was only the 70s when the picture was taken. Look again to see if you recognize her. We have two cute “couples” from Kindermasken long ago. Both were taken in 1958. I just Ll AA-00-20 w&mm > w® ' V : - V VO W    -J W' ii AA-00-21 AA-00-22 Child’s playing on thin ice breaks schoolmates’ hearts Dear Abby DEAR ABBY: Feb. 4 was a sad day. One less child is going to come back to school. He will never eat pizza, play games or laugh again. William Brown died on Feb. 3 in an icy pond in Chesapeake, Va. He and some other boys were playing on an iced-over pond when the ice broke. Two of the boys got out, and 911 people pulled one boy out of the pond. Sadly, William could not be revived. He died after 45 minutes in the freezing water. He wasn’t even a teen-ager yet. I had seen William in the halls at school, and he was probably in my class at one point or another. When I heard he had died, I started to cry. How could this happen to someone so young? I want to make sure no more children die the way William did. Please, Abby, warn your readers about the danger of ice. Even if the ice looks thick, it often isn’t. It may break, and you could drown. William learned the hard way. No laughter was heard in school today. The flag will be raised only halfway. One less person will come back to school — because of thin ice. — KRISTEN MC CARTHY, AGE 12, CHESAPEAKE, VA. DEAR KRISTEN: My deepest sympathy goes out to William Brown’s family. Your heartfelt warning deserves space in my column. DEAR ABBY: When I saw the letter from “Tempted,” the girls’ high school coach in California, I had to write. I would like to urge him to remain calm and cool. He should take “that look” some of his students are giving him as a compliment — and handle it gracefully. Girls that age quickly develop crushes, and sooner or later they get over them. I would not bench anybody or report her to the principal. To do so would be an overreaction and too harsh. I would let them flirt ail they want and continue to go about the business of coach ing. Girls learn to relate to and love men through their fathers. Dad is “safe” and should be a role model. Teachers and coaches are handy substitutes. — 60-YEAR-OLD RETIRED COACH IN CALIFORNIA Watch Batteries Installed, rn Linda Suite J. 629-2781 TONE STAI? , INK March 10-16 WALNUT 6 IU 35 and Walnut Ave ( 830) 629-6300 The to* Gate (H)#/ Hagng Up (PG-13) / Snow Day(PG-13) Nnd Best Thug (PG-13). car HOUN (hies (PG-13) TTggaMwejGit ..... ..(125). 420,6:50.920 (130i i3.30i 5.30 TM JJC T1101,(3:10). 5:10.7:10,9:10 (115) 4.45.720 SIO ..(1201,4:30 705.935 ..(IOO), (300), 5.00,7 OO, 9X /PT in* tPTitodtv Baign 0 No toy Jew Fit IMI IC Opar £a% M Weem1 **» aomoees oar STARPLEX 1250 Wondorworlrl Dr. (512) 805-8000 Scream 3(R)f Snow Day(PG) B Hangup (PG-13)# Rente Games (RI# PW Ste (RI# I# Dog Sty (PG-13)# Item To ton (PG)# The to* GM (R)# Whole to* teds (R) • Ofoenng Mona (PG-13) • Cn Rouse Rte (PG-13)# Aiwan Beamy (R) • Not Bael Thug (PG-13)# AU. Don’t forget about this year’s parade. Remember it has moved up a month to April I so you only have three weeks to put together a costume. I need to get busy myself. Spring Fling is just around the corner. On March 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can visit the Sophienburg Museum and enjoy the new exhibits and do a little shopping at our new “Sophie Shop” for $5. This is a great time to visit if you have never been before or if it has been a few years. It also helps the organization. As always, KEEP READING! KEEP REMEMBERING! and KEEP CALLING! Call us at 629-1900 or come by the Sophienburg Archives, 200 N. Seguin, the old city hall building. AA-00-19 The New Braunfels Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 771 will have a garage sale from 9 a.m. to I p.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge on West San Antonio Street. Proceeds from the sale will help provide area scholarships. Each chapter provides two scholarships — one for a New Braunfels High School senior and one for a Canyon High School senior.
