High School Winter Guard ensemble took first place in movement and equipment and second place overall in the Scholastic AA Division during competition Feb 19 at Clark High School in San Antonio The guard will proceed to the TECA South Texas Regional competition on March 18 and to the TECA state championships on March 25 Volunteer of the Year selected OakRun sixth grader Jessica Potter received the Youth Volunteer of the Year award from the YMCA of Comal County She was nominated by the YMCA for her willingness to help out in the PrimeTirne pro gram she has been enrolled in since 1997 Jessica has a cheerful funloving disposition She is always willing to help younger children with their snacks home work and arts and crafts as well as looking out for them on field stated the nomination let ter Potter was recognized at the YMCA of San Antonio and the Hill Countrys 113th annual vol unteer recognition banquet at the Doubletree Hotel in San Antonio Project Graduation Taco Bell Night New Braunfels High School Project Graduation 2000 organiz ers are joining forces with Taco Bell 249 N Loop 337 for a spe cial fundraiser on March 1 Taco Bell will donate 10 per cent of the days sales to NBHS Project Graduation From 6 to students from NBHS will serve as hosts for diners in the restaurant Project Graduation organizers also are rejoining efforts with Lubys Cafeteria to raise money for the annual graduation celebra tion Pick up a blue card for New Braunfels High School or a pink card for Canyon High School at local businesses and present the card to the cashier when eatting at Lubys in New Braunfels Lubys will donate 5 percent of the total bill before taxes to Project Graduation Cards are valid through May 14 Those who do not have a card can request one from the Lubys cashier Basketball legend to speak at NBHS George Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs organization will speak to New Braunfels High School freshmen on Friday Feb 25 at on the benefits of staying in school The event is sponsored by Communities in Schools An inspirational speaker Gervin joined the Spurs as a com munity relations representative in 1994 He played a total of 14 years dividing time among the ABA CBA and NBA He played 12 years for the Spurs and also served as an assistant coach under John Lucas NBMS induction slated March 6 Students at New Braunfels Middle School who are eligible for National Junior Honor Society will be inducted on March 6 dur ing ceremonies at the school gym at 7 Dr Peterson a professor at Southwest Texas State University will be the guest speaker For more information in band Four students from New Braunfels High School have attained that level Pictured from left back row are Dustin Schulze and Alan Janzen and front row Alex Rodriguez and Lauren Gaskamp The stu dents go through four levels of auditions and must attain a high enough chair at each level to go on to the next The levels are District Region Area and All State This is the second year that Schulze Janzen and Gaskamp have made All State Band and the third year that Rodriguez has earned the All State honor Members of the All State Band were hon ored by the New Braunfels ISO Board of Trustees
