From Staff Reports The Schertz Police Department has issued a composite drawing of one of the suspects involved in the murder of 28-year old New Braunfels resident John Adkins on Interstate 35 the day before Thanksgiving. Schertz Police Department officials said a witness to the murder, an Austin-area resident, came forward and agreed to work with law enforcement officials to develop a drawing of the passenger in the suspect vehicle. On Nov. 24, 1999, Adkins, a teacher in Northeast Independent School District, was driving southbound on 1-35 near the rest area and the Schwab Road exit around 11:30 a.m. Suspect when he was hit by gunfire from a passing car. Two men fired three shots, one of which hit Adkins in the back. Adkins’ car careened out of control and slammed into a minivan driven by Toe Sun Drake, 44. The minivan rolled over several times before coming to rest. Adkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Drake was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center with serious injuries. Witnesses reported the suspect car, a four-door gray or silver late-model Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Marquis, drove away from the scene at a high rate of speed. Sgt. Marc Bane with the Schertz Police Department said the witness who came forward saw the incident and got a good look at the passenger in the suspect car. “We feel there are more witnesses out there due to the heavy holiday traffic and with this new witness information we are hoping that others will come forward,” he said. Bane said the police department has received a few calls already. “We’re following up on those right now and still looking for other witnesses,” he said. Police said witnesses described the killers as Hispanic or Anglo men in their late 30s or 40s. Crimestoppers has issued a $1,000 reward and NEISD in San Antonio has issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and grand jury indictment of the men involved in Adkins' murder. Teachers shut down NBHS talent show early From staff reports A talent show at New Braunfels High School shut down early Monday night after students protested an administrative decision to prevent one band from performing. Principal Keith Garinger said the teachers sponsoring the Queen of Hearts Talent Show decided a band couldn’t play because they were behaving in an inappropriate manner. Garinger wouldn’t say specifically what the band mem bers were doing. “That's not the issue,” he said. Despite the announcement that they couldn’t play, the band jumped on the stage. “And that’s when it got loud,” Garinger said. Schools officials decided to shut down the event early because of the rowdiness, he said. “Some people didn’t get to do their talent,” he said. “But we’ll videotape those and show them during announcements.” RIDE/From 1A said as she showed a photograph of the earth illuminated by civilization. Ride emphasized that although NASA has gotten a lot of publicity for building space crafts to explore other planets, it also has been using the technology to enhance and change the way we see the earth. Ride retired from NASA in 1987 to become the director of the Cali fornia Space Institute at the University of Califomia-San Diego. She has received many awards, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service and the National Spaceflight Medal. 8.00 Yield to Maturity Due 02/15/15 CARJACKING/From 1A $420 in cash from the man before fleeing in the Camara. Rust said New Braunfels Police spotted the Camara and tried to stop it, but the suspects failed to stop. Watson said New Braunfels police officers pursued the vehicle into Guadalupe County on Farm-to-Market Road 725. Guadalupe County deputies also joined in the pursuit. Watson said the Camara headed west on FM 78 into the Marion city limits when it apparently ran off the right side of the road. “It seems the driver tried to overcorrect to the left and then the car skidded sideways and struck a parked, occupied car in a driveway,” Watson said. Milligan, who was trying to back out of a residential driveway, and the passenger in the Camara both were pronounced dead at the scene. Lee, who allegedly was driving the Camara, was transported to University Hospital with minor injuries. He was transported to the Comal County Jail Saturday afternoon. Watson estimated the Camara was traveling at 90 mph during the chase. But, he said police officials backed away from the pursuit when the Camara approached the city limits. “They actually were so far back they didn’t see the wreck happen,” he said. This marks the third carjacking in New Braunfels in the past six months. Two men, at least one who was armed, caxjacked a 21-year old New Braunfels woman in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Nov. IO. Another 21-year old New Braunfels woman was cariacked by an armed man in the 1400 block of Hillview’ Ave. Sept. 30. Rust said as the local community continued to grow. New Braunfels residents might increasingly become targets for crime. “People from San Antonio might think it’s easy pickings here,” he said. Rust said the most important thing to remember was to cooperate with the suspect. “Maintain a calm attitude. Don’t aggravate them. Your life is more valuable than anything they could take from you,” he said. Rust also suggested drivers keep their doors locked when inside their vehicles, but he said there was little someone could have done to prevent the most recent incident. “They (the couple) probably didn’t see them approach and it was a pretty dark, secluded street. (The suspects) might have been following them awhile,” he said. “Everyone has to go home at some time. With this type of crime, it’s hard to be on the defensive.” Callable Corporate Bonds Is your money working this hard?
