A controversial and highlypublicized 10yearold murder case is showing new signs of life Today Comal County Commission ers will consider allocating to a special fund for a law student to con duct research in the Kathie Balonis mur der case Commissioners meet at in the courthouse annex The state attorney generals office is investigating the case and is consider ing retrying Davis A spokeswoman with juvenile diabetes In turn her parents and her twin Jennifer have made a complete change in priorities as well as lifestyle and diet Dad Steven Roth said began going to the bathroom more and was getting thinner We took her to the doctor and she was 10 pounds lighter her sister They havent befett hatf otioer siaoe When she was diagnosed in May Sarah had a blood sugar level of 651 well above a normal blood sugar level of 100 Sarahs pediatric endocrinologist Dr Mark Danney said the normal insulin level for a person was between 70 and 110 Insulin is normal ly produced in the body In Sarahs case her body is not produc ing the beta cells mat make Dan ney said By checking her blood sugar and giving herself insulin she acts as the artifi cial pancreas where the beta cells are locat ed As long as she or her family continues to act as an artificial pancreas she can live a long normal Within 24 hours of diagnosis Sarah was in the intensive care unit at Santa Rosa Hos pital in San Antonio hoping it will be for the last time Nicole the daughter of Donny and Donna Meurin suffers from Sturge Weber Syndrome a rare brain disease characterized by a facial birthmark and seizures A benefit Development of excessive blood MEURIN vessels on Nicoles brain concern her doctors Nicole currently takes four medications to control her seizures and wears a helmet to protect her from physical injury Nicole and her family plan to visit with neurosurgeons in San Antonio on Tuesday about possible surgery to stop seizures and prevent possible damage The doctors say its tune for her to have CHRISTINA MINOR Staff Writer BULVERDE A difference of opinion about the future of Bulverde led city admin istrator Robert Hieronymus to tender his res ignation during a city council meeting Tuesday I went into the meeting with but not intending to he said By the end of the meeting I knew I had In his letter Hieronymus said he was deeply concerned that Mayor Bob Barton has a dif ferent vision than that for which I believe we originally incorporated our four cities I do not believe that it is possible for these two dissimilar visions to work together in harmo Hieronymus served as mayor of Bulverde West before it was consolidated with Bul verde East Bulverde North and Bulverde South in 1998 After the consolidation he became city administrator Barton agreed that he did not share the same vision as Hieronymus I ran on a platform to minimize paid city staff and to create a volunteer staff to support the paid he said Mr Hieronymus does not agree with Hieronymus wrote in his resignation letter that the present mayors style of manage ment and lack of respect for the professional staff of the city make it very difficult to do the daily business of the city within the city hall and with the Hieronymus said the three reasons for the incorporation of Bulverde were to manage growth manage water and prevent annexa tion by San Antonio He said Barton was interested only in keep ing San Antonio out of Bulverde I dont want Bulverde to be treated like a colonia of San Hieronymus said Barton said concern about annexation was the primary reason for the incorporation Management of growth leaders BY HEATHER TODD Staff Writer Middle school students in New Braunfels and Comal independent school districts will begin the 19992000 school year with new principals Comal ISD hired Janet Peden on Wednes day to be the new principal at Canyon Mid dle School while New Braunfels ISD picked Demetria Cummins on Tuesday to assume the same job at New Braunfels Middle School Peden a former teacher at Bulverde Ele mentary is returning to Comal County after four years with San Antonio ISD Canyon Middle Schools previous princi pal Nancy Cobb moved to the Comal ISD central office to be administrative assistant to superintendent Jerry Major CISD administration announced Pedens hiring Wednesday after the board decided Tuesday to let Major hire a new principal Peden said she looked forward to returning to Comal County which she considers home and working with CISD staff and Elementary from 1993 to 1995 While serving w the principal of Martin Luther King Middle School Peden said she brought the campus from low performing to an acceptable status Cummins who previously served as a middle school principal in Conroe Indepen dent School District is taking over die helm of NBMS after the July 2 resignation of Stephen Lindsey After one year at NBMS Lindsey accept ed a position with Wimberiey Independent School District to teach algebra and eighth grade math I wanted to get
