New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 26, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas . 10AQ Herald-Zeitung Q Friday,December 26,1997 ... ■ By TOM ERICKSON Staff Writer Movie Review Moviegoers who wish to stay away from high-powered action (“Tomorrow Never Dies”) or tragedy (“Titanic”) can find a great escape in “As Good as It Gets,” PG-13, which opens today at Marketplace 12, 651 Business Loop IH 35N. Writer James L. Brooks, known for his work with “Terms of Endearment,” “Broadcast News” and the television series “Taxi,” weaves an interesting web around a grumpy author named Melvin Udall, played by Jack Nicholson. As the film opens, we see Udall in rare form, angering his neighbor, a gay artist (Greg Kinnear), by tossing the artist's dog down the garbage chute. Udall then is confronted about the incident by Kinnear and his partner (Cuba Gooding Jr.) but refuses to admit his transgression. But Udall has a softer side, as seen when frequenting his favorite restaurant and sitting at “his” table, served by Carol, a single mother (Helen Hunt) who is the only one (Jets’ who can handle Melvin. By this point at least half of the plot becomes predictable: Udall will somehow fall for Carol and in turn shed some of his gruffness and aggressiveness. It is only after Kinnear is attacked by would-be burglars and nearly killed that Udall begins to warm to his neighbor and his dog. The three characters are eventually brought together, but it's the dog that brings the warm side out of Udall. “As Good as It Gets” remained upbeat and surprising despite the inevitable romantic theme, thanks in part to a strong performance from Nicholson, who makes Udall’s strange behaviors very believable. Gooding is outstanding and displays p to its his versatility in a supporting role, as Kinnear, who has come a long way since his days as host of “Talk Soup.” Television junkies also will recognize the performance of Yeanfley Smith, who plays another of Kinnear’s friends saddled with the task of cleaning up his life after the attack. If Smith's voice sounds familiar, it is — she provides it for Lisa on “The Simpsons” and also had a role on Fox's “Herman's Head.” Hunt shows a groat deal of talent in portraying a mother dealing with die loneliness of being single an4 humiliation that comes along with living with her own mottler. The film begins to drag about two-thirds of the way but picks up again at the end aq Hunt and Nicholson do finally fail fat each other. With so many films to choose from this holiday season, “As Good as It Gets” might not be the best of the bunch, but it does an excellent job of living up to its title.
