Ratings for tech film degin with a ustarn rating: ie » "poor, ” ★★★★ « “excellent” - followed by the Motion Picture Association of America rating and a family-viewing guide, the key for which appears below. MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING (Columbia/T riStar, $22.95): Julia Roberts reclaimed her romantic-comedy crown with director P.J. Hogan’s engaging tale, about a woman who panics, then schemes when her supposedly platonic pal (Dermot Mulroney) announces his plans to marry a seemingly ideal woman (Cameron Diaz). However, Rupert Everett steals the show as a gay acquaintance who assists Roberts. ★★★ (PG-13: AS, P) CON AIR (Touchstone, $107.11): Action producer Jerry Bruckheimer (TheRock) strikes again with this brawny adventure, casting Nicolas Cage as an ex-lawman paroled from prison and placed aboard a plane with convicts who overtake the aircraft in an escape bid. Cage then tries to stop their plot as they head toward Las Vegas; John Malkovich leads the villains, and John Cusack also appears. (R: AS, P, V) Dermot Mulroney and Catherine Keener also star. r.(R: AS, P) LAND BEFORE TIME V: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Universal, $19.98): This series of animated features has been kept alive by direct-to-video sequels, and this is the latest. As the subtitle indicates, young dinosaur Littlelot and his friends discover an isolated area fraught with danger, though they’re determined to explore it; the film offers an original music score that incorporates three new songs. (G) HELD OVER: MEN IN BLACK * (Columbia/T riStar, $23.95): The summer blockbuster comes to tape, as Will Smith and ’‘Tommy Lee Jones star in the fantasy-comedy as “defenders of the universe,” special agents assigned to search for sinister aliens posing as humans and destroy them. The special effects are plentiful and often quite amusing, and director Barry Sonnenfeld keeps the pace quick; Rip Tom co-stars. (PG-13: P,V) Juda Roberts, left, stars In My Bast Friend’* Wedding. a stash of Nazi gold hidden beneath the Sahara Desert; however, others seek it too. (PG-13: P,V) BOX OF MOONLIGHT (Trimark, $99.99): The relationships among a group of acquaintances go through considerable twists and turns— some of a romantic nature—in this comedy-drama from writcr-director Tom DiCiilo (Living in Oblivion). Those changes are prompted by one fellow’s (John Turturro) midlife crisis during a business trip; real-life spouses OPERATION CONDOR (Dimension, $103.91): Jackie Chan is back in action in this action fest, which opened in America this year but actually was released in his native Hong Kong six years earlier. He plays a troubleshooter who takes a couple of female cohorts (Carol “Dodo” Cheng, Eva Coho de Garcia) along as he tries to find CHASING AMY (Miramax, $103.91): Writcr-director Kevin Smith’s (Clerks) acclaimed comedy stars Joey Lauren Adams as a young woman who manages to attract the romantic interest of a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck). When he discovers that she’s gay, he starts reexamining his own views on sexuality and makes some big decisions on what to do next; Jason Lee also appears as his best friend. ***(R: AS, P) PREFONTAINE (Hollywood, $103.91): The true story of a long-distance runner who had Olympic aspirations is recalled in this drama from Hoop Dreams director Steve James, with Jared Leto (My So-Called life) in the title role. Steve Prefontaine championed other sportsmen’s causes before his untimely death in a car accident; Ed O’Neill (Married... With Children) and R. Lee Ermey also star. ★★(PG-13: AS, P) -Tribune Media Service* Rivera, at 54, brushing up news legacy TOP RATED VIDEOS At 54 and counting, it's hardly surprising that Geraldo Rivera has begun to focus on his place in the history of American television journalism. The host of CNBC’s Rivera Live and the syndicated Geraldo Rivera Show surely knows better than anyone else that, if he warns ULibc regarded as having been a positive force in the profession, he has a loc of work to do. These concerns, not financial issues, apparently are uppermost in Rivera’s mind as he ponders what to do after his contract with NBC expires this month. Rivera accepted an offer from Fox News that emphasizes on-air exposure in connection with news coverage. That acceptance, however, triggered a clause in his existing contract that allows NBG to keep Rivera with an equivalent offer. NBC executives, sources said, have crafted just such a proposal. Rivera is weighing his options. Some of this is downright silly, of course, as all the participants doubtless understand, lf Rivera is truly concerned about his reputation, the worst thing he could possibly do is go to work for Rupert Murdoch, journalism's Ponce of Darkness, and Murdoch’s pugnacious conservative Beelzebub, Roger Ailcs, CEO of Fox News. Aiks, when he ran CNBC, kt Rivera devise a show that relied more on the host’s intelligence and interviewing skills. NBC confronts some uncomfortable truths. First, Rivera’s generally respectabk and interesting weeknight show is by far the most popular program on CNBC. Even so, it represents only five first-run hours of the 168 hours the channel is on every week. Second, Rivera obviously travels with a lot of ncgat ive jouraaimtc baggage and it would be risky, if not foolish, for NBC to try to hold onto him by making sweeping formal commitments to use him on NBG News programs and for coverage of breaking stories. But there’s also a pot-calling-the-kcttk-black factor here. NBC is arguably television’s foremost practitioner of stealth tabloidism. The difference between these practices and Rivera’s journalistic travesties might be more a matter of degree than of substance. Rivera wants to break with his tarnished past. Getting out of sleazy daytime-talk syndication would be a dramatic wav to start. -Erie Mb*. ai wa—a. fWlkj M--- ■BMW I WK MMj RVwB Public Invited New Year Eve’s Dance Sound of Country w/Frank Kosub ed.-Dec. 31st / 8:00-12 a m. *12®° Per Person ^1 Bingo Every Thursday Night- Lie, # 1-74-1328848-5 Great Stocking Stuffers: BEANIE BABIES Available Dee. 13-14 at Beanie Show in New Braunfels Factory Store, Ste. 650 Benefits Women’s Shelter Rjddggft^Cruptani brat New 0nas •IT \a; or More Information Donna Peakunif 830-914-2820 BRAUNTEX 625-4411 290 W San Antonio . 1i0 ALL SHOWS M °< 1.
