The Mighty Unicorn Band which has been entertaining playoff fans this fall has been busy with its own com petitions Named to the district band were the following New Braunfels High School musicians Heather Saathoff Leifeste Christina Pena Lori Kalich Priscilla Trejo Alice Navarro Deanndra Baker Ashley Absher Joy Sanders Amber Koepp Cory Weber DavidHerrera Tyler Robertson Lind say Leifeste John Mullins and Mike Gentine These district band members ad vanced to be named to the region band as well September Baker Mandy Reary Casie Woods Loren Woods Lauren Gaskamp Christina Brandon Heather Osborne Crystal Garcia Lizette Moncivias Baylea Taylor Francesca Garcia Amy Moore Jes sica Torres December Gaytan Jonathan Brett Nelson Mark Allen Scott Morgan Glenn Whitaker Gary Kennedy Alex Rodriguez Dustin Schulze Justin Mills and Stephen Schlather These students advanced from dis trict and region to make the area band and orchestra They will audition for the state band at the area competition on Jan 10 Vying for state are Casie Woods Baylea Taylor Loren Woods Lauren Gaskamp Nick Leifeste Brett Nelson Dustin Schulze Scott Mor gan Alex Rodriguez and Christina Brandon The bands are under the direction of Beth Bronk who is assisted by Becky Puckett Randy Leifeste and Melissa Townsend JThe public has a chance to hear this awardwinning band at its holi day concert on Tuesday memories of an exciting fall to keep them warm they can buy an attractive lap throw too Just in time for Christmas gifts and staying warm at the Astrodome and during soccer season the PTAs are selling cotton woven throws The blankets are blue and white and fea ture a large Unicorn with the words New Braunfels Unicorns on it The throws which measure 46 by atc are To buy yours contact your schools PTA president directly or call City Council PTA chairman Jeannine Biggers at 6250528 If you purchase a throw from a school PTA president the school will benefit directly from the profits All proceeds from City Council PTA sales will be split among the participating schools Either way the students benefit rispniepne gets to stay a little Cheer the football team on The New Braunfels Unicorns are making their first appearance in the UIL State 5A Region II football play offs on Saturday Dec 13 The New Braunfels High School football teams plays AliefHastings at 8 in the Houston Astrodome On Friday night the community has a chance to show their support for these young men and their coaches at cafetorium The gathering will include video highlights of the season thus far The event is organized by the NBHS All Sports Booster Club The club is also arranging for char ter bus transportation to the game on Saturday A sign up sheet is available at the ticket sale window at NBHS For Meet the Teachers features educators who are new to New Bfattnfels Independent School District Donna Lemley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies with a minor in English from Schreiner College Her teaching certification is in Elementary Education and Elementary English A beginning educator she teaches third graders at Seele Elementary School Greatest pleasure in teaching I get great pleasure from seeing my students grow and Philosophy of education I see students as bundles of potential Each one has individual needs strengths and goals and deserves to have them addressed I get excited watching a child learn and grow Each one has the potential for greatness My job as a teacher is to help every student reach his or her full potential I need to give my students the tools to grow and achieve their goals Children need to be taught basic skills but they must also be treated as wonderful human beings who are creative and talented Their selfesteem must be nurtured Their minds must be challenged They must feel safe secure and proud of their learning The joy of working with children and watching them burst into bloom gives me great personal satisfaction I get a thrill every time I see a childs face light up with pride because they have learned something Nothing could be more Cynthia Leslie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Option II Reading from the University of North Texas A new teacher she has a class of first graders at Lone Star Primary School Greatest pleasure in teaching I think that my greatest pleasure in teaching will come from the relationships that will grow between me and my students and from seeing the happy faces of children who are motivated to Philosophy of education I believe that by encouraging motivating and supporting them all children can learn I feel that a teachers role should be one of a facilitator not a dictator By providing an environment where the students feel secure
